Slow reader. Even slower writer.
Working on my debut novel, a dark fantasy story inspired by Scottish mythology and folklore 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚔️

POSTS STORIES REELS

Halloween felt like the perfect excuse to share some of the creatures that have haunted Scottish folklore for generations!

Scotland has no shortage of stories about strange things waiting in forests, lochs, coastlines and the dark places of the world, and they’ve been a huge inspiration behind my dark fantasy novel, Shards of the Divine!

So in honour of spooky season, here are a few creatures I hope to bring to life as I continue writing the novel and building the world of Dunraith!

Which of these do you fear the most?!

Which of these would you like to know more about? Or, if there are any Scottish or Celtic myths and legends you think I should explore, please share them below!

Happy Halloween 🎃👻🧛‍♂️

And just like that, another milestone hit 🙌💙

Thanks so much to everyone, not only for the likes and follows, but for the genuine interactions and open conversations about writing, reading, socials, real life, and everything in-between, it's all been great!!

There wasn't any music options that fit "400" so I went with something that represents my thought process knowing so many people are along for the ride on this 🙌🎉

REAL PROGRESS MADE 🙌

I tried my first ever writing sprint exercise today with a few new writer friends, and I genuinely didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did!

There’s something about knowing everyone else is furiously typing away at the same time that suddenly makes the usual process of staring at the same sentence for twenty minutes feel unacceptable!

And, as it turns out, I may be slightly competitive.
Very competitive.
But it worked!

With all the usual real-life elements we all face, and love of course, it can be easy to put writing to the bottom of the priority list! But given today's events, this definitely won’t be my last sprint to make the most of precious time!

Writers, do you use writing sprints? Or do you have any other methods I could experiment with next?

Thanks to @jennakatewrites and @heleenagoessling for the challenge!

Strangely, being a non-believer has made writing religion one of my favourite parts of fantasy!

My debut novel, Shards of the Divine, has a pantheon woven deeply into the world, its history, and the magic system itself.

I’ve never been especially interested in the finer details of religion, but I’ve always been fascinated by the effect belief can have on people, communities and entire societies.

What happens when faith becomes tradition?
When tradition becomes law?
When religion gives people hope, but also gives others something they can use to control them?

You don’t have to share a belief to understand how powerful belief can be, and I think that’s what makes it so interesting to write.

Writers: do your worlds have religion? And have you ever found it difficult to write convincingly about beliefs that differ from your own?

Readers: do you enjoy religion, gods and mythology playing a major role in fantasy?

After yesterday's post and hearing everyones motivations in life, I felt the timing was right for a wee appreciation post. Nothing quite like a woodland walk to reset for the coming week 🌲🌳

QOTD - Do you have any ways you unwind or break the routine if writing/reading feels heavy and more of a task than an enjoyable activity?

Happy weekend everyone 🙌🍂

We seem to have graduated from bedtime readings of The Highway Rat and Superworm, and went straight to Lee Childs @jackreacherbooks 💪

"Details matter", although I must admit the 4 year old mind does talk of dinosaurs, transformers and sealife adventures when he's reading out loud, and I know he would always be happy to share those ideas with Mr Child/Amazon Prime if ever needed!

It may be outside of his level and interest for now, but to hear my son speak of writing, and connecting that to his dad means to world to me, and it's one of the biggest motivations to have a finished book to hand to my boys one day!

QOTD - what is your biggest motivation, especially when it seems tough? This could be related to writing, hobbies in general, even big life struggles 🙌
