Strangely, being a non-believer has made writing religion one of my favourite parts of fantasy!

My debut novel, Shards of the Divine, has a pantheon woven deeply into the world, its history, and the magic system itself.

I’ve never been especially interested in the finer details of religion, but I’ve always been fascinated by the effect belief can have on people, communities and entire societies.

What happens when faith becomes tradition?
When tradition becomes law?
When religion gives people hope, but also gives others something they can use to control them?

You don’t have to share a belief to understand how powerful belief can be, and I think that’s what makes it so interesting to write.

Writers: do your worlds have religion? And have you ever found it difficult to write convincingly about beliefs that differ from your own?

Readers: do you enjoy religion, gods and mythology playing a major role in fantasy?

I'm exactly the same! I always find it so fascinating and love to see it intertwined in fantasy settings

Honestly, such a good point! I love exploring how faith shapes a world's culture and the way people are controlled by it. Tying the pantheon directly into the magic system sounds so interesting for Shards of the Divine!

I think that allows for an open minded approach from the author… it’s easy to ask the what if questions as a non believer thanks believer, I feel!❤️

Oh yeah, I touch on religious fanaticism in my work. As a recovering Catholic Im fascinated by how much power people hand over in religion.

My WIP does include some mythology. I used to love learning about mythology and other religions when I was younger. But in the last decade and a half, it has seemed to slipped away. Still interested, just not as motivated to learn about it atm

I actually started to write my oppressive religious system to be like Christianity. As I was researching more about it, I've ended up becoming more christian! I've now had to change the religious system somewhat

I can see this. When it’s not something you practise and is a part of your everyday life, you have more research to do, making it more interesting just by nature. My world doesn’t include religion. There are a lot of beliefs though 🖤
