🇩🇰 Efter to årtiers kulturel brobygning i Kina: Dansk Kulturinstituts Eric Messerschmidt tildeles Ridderkorset 🇨🇳

UngKlang wraps up a successful tour in Beijing!

The young Danish vocal ensemble UngKlang has captivated audiences in Beijing with three unforgettable concerts! They performed at remarkable venues such as Beijing’s largest park, Chaoyang Park, as part of a Danish-Chinese cultural festival, at Sino-Danish Center (SDC), a university partnership between Denmark and China filled with students from both countries, and at the Danish Cultural Center in the famous 798 Art District.

Their visit to China was met with great enthusiasm and heartfelt reactions from locals, especially young people, who showed their appreciation with standing ovations, warm words, and flowers after each performance. Many expressed how deeply moved they were by UngKlang’s skilled vocals and emotional storytelling.🎶🇩🇰 by @dccbeijing

We invite you to take a look inside our current exhibition 'Reflected Shadows' at Danish Cultural Institute’s cultural center in 798 Art Zone, Beijing @dccbeijing.

In the exhibition “Reflected Shadows” Danish artists Signe Emma (@signeemma ) & Benny Brankovic (@benny_brankovic ) explores the issues of "seeing and being seen", something which is relevant across generations especially the younger ones in both China and the West, and invited artists Xie Rong (@echomorgan ), Deng Xiao (@xiaodengart ) and Thomas Knak (@hamtknak ) to jointly engage in a cross-cultural dialogue on identity and self-presentation.

As social media becomes increasingly popular, the fluidity of identity caused by seeing and being seen has been accelerated to an unprecedented level. This exhibition conducts cross-cultural exploration in this context, analyzing how contemporary society exacerbates the existential dilemma, fragile nature and wavering choices of human beings with its infinite possibilities of capriciousness and identity representation.

The five works specially created for this exhibition by five Chinese and Danish artists interpret the philosophy of mutual reflection and reflection between me and others, individuals and groups in their own unique artistic forms, and together constitute an overall artwork that explores issues of identity and existence. Here, the expression of contemporary art is concretized through spatial narrative, physical touch and sound field.

The exhibition is on show until August 10th and is one of the series of cultural celebrations in 2025 that marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Denmark.

The project could never have been possible without the generous support of S.C. Van Fonden , @statenskunstfond , Knud Højgaards Fond and Jorcks Fond and sponsors @litecomgroup , @kvadrattextiles , and @dalispeakers

Thank you very much to everyone involved specially @hcandersens.hus and the whole team at @dccbeijing

“Culture speaks directly into people”

In the third episode of ‘CULTURE CONNECTS - conversation starters about culture’ we travel to Beijing, China.

Here, Country Director Eric Messerschmidt heads the Danish Cultural Institute’s very own Danish Cultural Center - favourably located in the city’s vibrant art district.

In recent years, the Cultural Center has had a special focus on mental health and mentally vulnerable people - and in this respect, culture has a special place.

‘“Vulnerable topics often benefit from being communicated through culture,” says Eric. Because when you ‘use’ culture in a conversation with people you don’t know - for example, culture in the form of an art exhibition - it can ‘open barriers’ and ‘create direct access to the resonant space that we all hold: the common humanity.’

German sociologist Hartmut Rosa has focussed on ‘resonance’: How we as modern humans long for resonance - connections where we don’t just react, but are moved, touched and connected. An experience of the world ‘responding back’.

Watch the video here and get an insight into our work in China 👇

The Danish Cultural Center, in collaboration with the National Museum of Denmark and Chinese cartoonist Nie Jun, presents the exhibition “The Danish Girl and the God of Thunder.” This marks the first cultural celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and China.

In the spring of 2024, Nie Jun was invited to Copenhagen by the National Museum of Denmark. During his stay, he explored the city in depth, engaging with local young people to better understand their perspectives and ideas. Inspired by this experience - and captivated by the museum’s scroll “The Thunder Department Goes on an Inspection Tour 雷部出巡图”- Nie Jun created a unique comic.

The story follows a Danish girl who, after her parents’ divorce, finds solace through a magical encounter with the Chinese thunder god Lei Gong and the divine members of the Thunder Department. This comic beautifully blends Eastern philosophy with Western storytelling to create a heartwarming and joyful tale.

✨ New Sign for the DCC ✨

Take a closer look, and you’ll notice that the sign for the Danish Cultural Center is actually made of LEGO bricks!

The original sign, created in 2014, was designed in grey tones by Professor Lü Pinjing, Dean of the School of Architecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and donated by @lego.

Now, a decade later, the sign has been redesigned by Wei Wei Gluckman, @weiweigluckman, the first female LEGO® Certified Professional.

The new design reflects key values such as Danish culture, dialogue, respect, diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and curiosity – the very values the Danish Cultural Center has promoted since its founding.

Mina Okabe delivered a fantastic concert in Beijing on Thursday evening as part of her Asia Tour 2024! 🎤✨

Mina, who was born and raised in London with Danish-Japanese roots, has lived in cities like New York and Manila, and has spent the past five years in Denmark.

We from the Danish Cultural Center were present at the concert and truly enjoyed her wonderful performance. After the concert, we had the pleasure of speaking with Mina and her band, who were very excited to be touring in China for the first time. They were incredibly kind and welcoming! During the concert, Mina also mentioned that she hopes to return to Beijing and see everyone again at her next show 🎶

We look forward to more amazing music from Mina Okabe! by @dccbeijing
