Introducing D-Composed, our inaugural creative partners at The Land School.

D-Composed is a Chicago-based Black chamber music collective that breaks down preconceived notions of what is considered to be classical music by celebrating creativity through the music of Black composers.

We are honored to provide D-Composed with their first true home, a dedicated space to convene, rehearse, perform, and grow as an ensemble and organization on the South Side. We will soon be announcing @dcomposed’s first season of programs at The Land School, in partnership with artists @angeltheoracle, @jamilawoods, @paulithepsm and @alogginshull.

Tomorrow, registration will go live for the first welcome at The Land School. Turn on post notifications to be the first to know.

Now that you know who we are, we wanted to share more about what we do by highlighting our programs.

First, some fun facts about our audience:

⭐️Most of our attendees are new to classical and chamber music

⭐️Over 90% of our audience is new to learning about the works of Black composers.

What are we doing about this?

With that newness in mind, our programs serve as different gateways to experience the works of Black composers designed with our audience's unique identities, interests, and motivations in mind.

There's no gatekeeping here! Swipe through to learn more about each of our programs and see which one may be a fit for you!

For Giving Tuesday today, help us raise $10,000 to support our programming efforts.

We're more than halfway there, so help us cross that finish line!

Thank you for being partners and collaborators in making this work possible.

Good music. Great people. Even better energy. 🎶

Listening Hours at The Land School brought us together to slow down, tune in, and experience music the way it’s meant to be felt, together.

Across two special sessions in A Listening Space, D-Composed ensemble members invited us into the music, ideas, and experiences shaping their artistry.

Anya Brumfield joined her father, Antoine Brumfield, for a listening session centered around *Earth, Heaven, or Hell*, Antoine’s solo project exploring the human experience through musical storytelling.

Khelsey Zarraga and Wilfred Farquharson shared selections connected to their current research and creative practices, opening up conversation around their influences and ongoing work as performing artists.

Thank you to everyone who listened, shared, and spent time in community with us at The Land School. 🤎

Until the next listen. We hope you’ll be in the room. 🎶 by @dcomposedchicago

Celebrating freedom through rest 😴

This past Juneteenth, we gathered at The Land School ( @rebuild_foundation ) for our 3rd Annual Freedom Lullabies with Tricia Hersey ( @thenapministry )!

This was the first ever Freedom Lullabies event held at The Land School. Getting to co-create a safe space for Black folks to engage in communal rest, imagination, and liberation was deeply healing. ✨

We also enjoyed performing the works of Black composers such as Florence Price, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, and our very own Seth Pae, while Tricia read revolutionary texts from Zora Neale Hurston, bell hooks, and Octavia Butler.

We appreciate Tricia and The Nap Ministry for working with us on this immersive experience. We are so grateful to everyone who came out to rest, reflect, and celebrate with us!

Stay up to date on all of our upcoming events via our link in bio. 🔗

Here’s a look back at ‘Love Is...’ 🤎

Earlier this month, we worked with the Poetry Foundation ( @poetryfoundation ) and Rebuild Foundation ( @rebuild_foundation ) for ‘Love Is’ — a program that invited 6 local poets to explore their own unique definitions of Love, live at The Land School.

Since love is not a monolith, we wanted to create a space that honored its many forms and artistic expressions. The program featured compositions from Ahmed Al Abaca, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and arrangements by our own Khelsey Zarraga. It was so exciting getting to use the music of Black composers to amplify these words and stories! ✨📖

A huge thank you to the featured poets of ‘Love Is’:
Shawnee Dez ( @shawnee_dez )
Faylita Hicks ( @faylitahicks )
Raych Jackson ( @raychjackson )
Davon Clark ( @daybydavon )
Marvin Tate ( @marvintate1959 )
Shanta Nurullah ( @sitarsis )

We also want to give a special shout-out to the South Side Home Movie Project ( @southsidehomemovies ) for allowing us to use home-movie footage from their archive in the performance!
