@blackmonumentensemble & @dcomposedchicago ’s record 𝐃𝐚𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 has landed in Chicago !!! Pictured here is the BEAUTIFUL Limited Edition *Dawning* Color Vinyl. This record is 140g manual press color vinyl housed inside a heavyweight jacket (with artwork by Damon Locks), wrapped with an IARC obi, includes an insert sheet (with liner notes by Damon Locks and D-Composed’s @khelseyz, and photographs by @byashleymia, @bjashby, and @cai_fyi) resting inside a poly-lined inner-sleeve. The records were pressed at Pallas in Germany with lacquers cut by Daniel K at SST. This edition is limited to 𝟒𝟒𝟒 copies worldwide.

Images taken this spring at The Land School, a @rebuild_foundation project, that is part of @theastergates ongoing transformation of Chicago’s south side. Housed in a former elementary school that had been empty for over 10 years. It’s now home to a number of Chicago artists-in-residence. Dawning, the new album from Damon Locks (@blackmonumentensemble) & @dcomposedchicago, arrives on December 4th via @intlanthem! Hear the single “We Stay Beginning” today and pre-order the album now on CD and Vinyl.

Dawning is a collaboration between Chicago creative music mainstay Damon Locks and Black chamber music collective D-Composed. The material was recorded live at The Land School, Rebuild Foundation’s headquarters on Dorchester Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, where D-Composed & International Anthem are the inaugural creative partners in residence.

The album’s sonic palette pairs Locks’ live sampling, beat knowledge, and spoken word swagger with D-Composed’s take on the Black string ensemble with otherworldly results.

Today, Chicago based visual artist, educator, vocalist, musician, and deejay @blackmonumentensemble and Black chamber music collective @dcomposedchicago announce their collaborative debut album 𝐃𝐚𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, out on LP, CD, and digitally via International Anthem 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

Dawning was recorded in the auditorium of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, artist @theastergates and @rebuild_foundation ’s headquarters in a reconstituted former elementary school on Chicago’s south side, where D-Composed and International Anthem have been creative partners-in-residence since its opening in 2025. The album’s sonic palette pairs Locks’ live sampling, beat knowledge, and spoken word swagger with D-Composed’s uniquely improvisational take on the string quartet. D-Composed’s quartet in this instance features: violinists @khelseyz and @anya.breann , violist @sethamusic , and cellist @lindseysharpie .

“What began as a reflection on our relationship to the land became a sonic experiment reflecting blackness in the present moment through hope, rage, protest, and resistance,” say Locks and Zarraga in their co-written liner notes for the album. What we hear on Dawning is a performance that Locks and Zarraga say was meant to be “a sound experience that pulls you in and wrings you out.” The recorded document is hard to argue with. From sublime and consonant downbeat grooves to genuinely frightening, dissonant and anxious meltdowns, the six pieces that make up the album cover so much musical ground with such an expert touch that it can be difficult to remember that we’re listening to something that occurred all at once in the same room.

As we build on the momentum of our first year at The Land School, we’re continuing to expand what Black stewardship of land and creative apprenticeship can look like, primarily through the lens of place-based artistic interventions.
