This lecture will trace the development of teacher education from the establishment of St Patrick's College on Clonliffe Road in 1875, to its movement to Drumcondra. Professor James Kelly will identify the contribution of the Vincentian community, examine the programme of instruction pursued in the Independent state, and its restructuring in the 1960s and 1970s. This endured until the 1990s when the College embarked on the relationship with Dublin City University that resulted in its incorporation into the University in 2016.

Location: G401, Library 3rd floor (beside lift)
Age Group: 12+

šŸ“š What’s behind Ireland’s love of reading?

Consistency and deliberate, steady curriculum reform at primary school level have had a significant impact on Ireland’s reading standards, according to new research from Dr Patrick Burke and Dr Conall Ó Breacháin.

šŸ’”Their research examining 100 years of literacy education in Ireland found that trusting teachers, putting children at the centre of new and evolving curricula, and the growing recognition of the complexity of learning and teaching reading in schools have all contributed to the high standards of reading seen across Ireland.

šŸ’”Research into professional learning is rapidly evolving and driving change within a range of organisations from schools and higher education institutes, to the public sector, NGOs, and the private sector.

Furthering this research is at the heart of the Professional Learning and Teacher Education area of professional focus on the Doctor of Education programme at DCU.

Whether it’s exploring research pathways around mentoring, coaching, and workplace and online learning, or examining how policies and systems are shaping professional learning, this four year part-time programme gets to the coalface of what works and what needs revising within organisations.

Teacher Wellbeing Research
Vast majority of teachers in Northern Ireland are experiencing work-related burnout, according to @dublincityuniversity Institute of Education research undertaken in collaboration with St Mary’s University College in Belfast
Speaking about the importance of the findings, Dr Sabrina Fitzsimons, from Dublin City University’s research centre said, ā€˜This study is a reminder that teacher burnout cannot be addressed through temporary measures or initiatives focused solely on enhancing teacher resilience in the face of ongoing stressors.'

šŸŒ The world is changing around us and navigating it positively requires leaders in education for a sustainable future.

This very issue is at the heart of DCU’s Doctor of Education - Education for Sustainable Futures area of professional focus.

It explores themes such as global citizenship, sustainable development, the climate and nature emergency, and digital transformation through a social justice lens.

What do we owe future generations? What constitutes meaningful social responses to the climate and nature emergency? How do we repair historical as well as ongoing and future injustices and inequalities in and through education?

If these are questions you would like to explore through structured and supported research, check out the Doctor of Education’s programme link in our bio!
