POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

very excited to share, that my short documentary film, Shades of Red, has been listed as a Semi-Finalist at the Rhode Island International Film Festival @flickers.riiff, officially selected by CineAsian Films @cineasianfilms , and nominated by Toronto Women Film Festival @tinwff

This is the first short doc I made independently, and I genuinely hold this film close to my heart.

Thank you, 晴 @princessofchinatown , for co-creating with me, and making this happen. For all the sharing and letting me be part of your life to witness and tell the story. Knowing you, through each moment each conversation, has truly been a GIFT 💛

Endless grateful to the ballroom community and culture. I’ve been inspired and influenced through individuals in Beijing voguing & ballroom scene back in 2021, and have had the urge of sharing ever since. It’s a long journey of learning, experiencing, reflecting, creating, and being; so many friends, mentors, practitioners & people from the community, have guided me to grow as a doc filmmaker and person.

Genuinely happy and honored that I could share this precious gift from Qing, from all the ballroom community practitioners, to a larger audience through my lens. (Writing this down still feels surreal. ) 🫀期待screening 和大家见面的机会

𝘎𝘶, the drum; 𝘞𝘶, the dance.

➢ Through house dance foundations and Chinese folk-cultural influences, Gu Wu 鼓舞 centers on the feeling of exchange between rhythm, sound-making, and dance.
Central to the piece is a large-scale, custom-built wooden drum.

➢ Rooted in intercultural connectedness, Gu Wu 鼓舞 explores new ways of moving through Asian women’s bodies—with grounded power, and an expansive sense of presence.

𝘎𝘶 𝘞𝘶 鼓舞 is performed by

Inspired by the idea of relational motion, Orbit is a live performance showcase about how bodies, systems, and technologies influence one another.

An orbit is both the path one body takes around another and the act of moving in circles. As the ways we live and connect continue to change, what can orbit—the path, the repetition, the pull—tell us about moving together? How can technology be reimagined to shape movement, emotion, and our relationships with one another and the spaces around us?

Until the Bees Return
Shihan Zhang

Until the Bees Return is a curated live activation of The Department of Species Services, in which a dancer assumes the role of a Seasonal Human Pollination Technician. Moving through the installation as a pollination worker, the performer interacts with California poppy flowers, spatial sound, and AI-generated visuals. Through repeated gestures of touch, care, and labor, the performance transforms human pollination into an embodied ritual, asking what forms of work may emerge when ecological collapse and artificial intelligence begin to reorganize human purpose.

-

Shihan Zhang @shihan.design is an award-winning design futurist who builds worlds to think with. Her work explores more-than-human futures through systemic worldbuilding and immersive simulations, translating ecological, technological, and cultural shifts into tangible, multi-sensory encounters.
