Moments from 🪐ORBIT, Aug 9 at Abrons Art Center

Orbit is a live performance showcase presented by @inmotion_nyu In Motion NYU and supported by @uaad.art Underground Art and Design. Through an open call, the program features works at the intersection of movement and emerging technologies, bringing together artists, designers, engineers, and technologists from across NYU and beyond. Inspired by the idea of relational motion, Orbit explores how bodies, systems, and tools influence one another, treating connection as both a performance theme and a community practice.

A look back at (Dis)consent: A Night of Performance and Interactive Installations, presented by @uaad.art and @mesh_art_center on Aug 2 💛

3 groups of artists brought together performance, interactive AI, and speculative ecology to examine agency and consent in systems where our choices are increasingly shaped by algorithms, interfaces, and institutions.

🪩 Katherine Helen Fisher @khfdance’s 𝘾𝙮𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙜 𝙈𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧 𝙄𝙄 explored AI, audience data, and collective authorship. 🤳Mengna Da @yumedaaa’s 𝙎𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙂𝙐𝙈𝙈𝙄𝙀𝙎 𝘿𝙊𝙉’𝙏 𝘾𝙍𝙔 turned the audience into operators of her own body, examining data extractivism and digital labor, with live music by Chienn Tai @desigh.llc. 🐝 Shihan Zhang @shihan.design’s 𝙐𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙚𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 reimagined pollination as embodied labor in a speculative post-ecological future, with movement performance by @dddyiliny.

The evening concluded with a conversation on authorship, desire, play, and algorithmic control, moderated by @_paigek, co-founder of MESH_Arts.

𝘎𝘶, the drum; 𝘞𝘶, the dance.

➢ Through house dance foundations and Chinese folk-cultural influences, Gu Wu 鼓舞 centers on the feeling of exchange between rhythm, sound-making, and dance.
Central to the piece is a large-scale, custom-built wooden drum.

➢ Rooted in intercultural connectedness, Gu Wu 鼓舞 explores new ways of moving through Asian women’s bodies—with grounded power, and an expansive sense of presence.

Until the Bees Return
Shihan Zhang

Until the Bees Return is a curated live activation of The Department of Species Services, in which a dancer assumes the role of a Seasonal Human Pollination Technician. Moving through the installation as a pollination worker, the performer interacts with California poppy flowers, spatial sound, and AI-generated visuals. Through repeated gestures of touch, care, and labor, the performance transforms human pollination into an embodied ritual, asking what forms of work may emerge when ecological collapse and artificial intelligence begin to reorganize human purpose.

-

Shihan Zhang @shihan.design is an award-winning design futurist who builds worlds to think with. Her work explores more-than-human futures through systemic worldbuilding and immersive simulations, translating ecological, technological, and cultural shifts into tangible, multi-sensory encounters.
