WORLD SKATE GAMES ASU26 🇵🇾 It is very sad that, after so many months and years of preparation, athletes arrive at a World Championship only to find that the road circuit does not meet the necessary conditions for safe competition. Yesterday, the rain and the condition of the asphalt, which had been laid just two weeks before the competition, prevented the scheduled events from taking place. Today, the concern is the extremely tight corners, which are unsuitable for the speeds reached by inline speed skaters. But this should have been checked many months in advance. A speed skating road circuit requires a thorough technical assessment beforehand, carried out by specialists who understand the demands of this sport: the dimensions of the course, the radius of the corners, the road surface and the speeds athletes can reach. You cannot arrive at a World Championship and start assessing on-site whether a circuit is suitable for competition, especially after skaters have already fallen. Athletes’ physical safety must never be put to the test. At this point, expressions of regret or claims that the risks were unknown are simply not enough. There are people responsible for ensuring these conditions are met, and that is their job. Months of training, personal sacrifices, travel and accommodation expenses, dreams and sporting goals have all been affected by a situation that should have been anticipated well in advance. There is an enormous amount of hard work behind every athlete, and not everyone has another event in which to compete. Situations like these should make us all reflect on the future of this sport. 40 years later, it feels like nothing has changed. We raced on closed industrial roads, but never at today’s speeds. How can we dream of becoming Olympic if we’re still facing the same problems? Lessons must be learned, and real measures must be taken to ensure that something like this never happens again. Our sport deserves to grow, but it must do so with professionalism, proper planning and, above all, respect for the athletes. My thoughts are with the skaters. ❤️🛼 yovima@skating taken in Costanera de Asuncion by @de.projekt
