Happy Black breastfeeding week🙌🏾 As a first time mom I have such a new appreciation for breastfeeding. For context , I was one of those babies that breastfed past 2. That was tugging on my mom asking for more milk in public 🙃so when I had Ella I was so excited to breastfeed. I went in knowing all the benefits but yall…why did no one tell me that this is work! How could no one give me a heads up about cluster feeding!?!?

I’m so grateful for the journey we’ve had for the last 8 months but there have been many times where it is both physically and mentally challenging. I’m all for supporting and encouraging breastfeeding but like so many other health topics many of the ideas around how to do this are focused on the individual. The public health practitioner in me has some thoughts on policies, systems and environmental supports that could potentially help us breastfeeders out. Lmk if you have any other ideas!

🤱🏾Paid time off for at least six months (for you and one other person- spouse, partner, parent, whoever can help)
🤱🏾Your very own pump part and bottle washer
🤱🏾Free as needed check ins with lactation consultant (you all are angels)
🤱🏾Lactation rooms equipped with snacks and bevvies
🤱🏾Paid pumping time when back at work

Remember that time @drcamillerange and I authored a book chapter 😅 Effective Leadership and Management in Nutrition & Dietetics Chapter 3: Embracing Diversity & Embodying Inclusive Leadership in Nutrition & Dietetics out now (cue air horns)🚨🚨

So much to say about the process: first, I’m so glad I had a friend to write this with. It took 1+ yeas and pushed me to think in new ways, including finding a way to tackle my procrastination. Shout out to Camille for encouraging me to do hard things. There were countless zooms, texts, drafts, readings, ideas,and mental health check ins but we got it done 🙏🏾. Scenes from a work turned fun trip in the East Coast last week.
- Spent the week in Boston and saw coworkers IRL both old and new
- Hopped over to NYC to take a live peloton class with the phenomenal @chelsealovesyoga and hang out with some college besties
