Smiling because I’ll be behind the booth at @smartbarchicago for the first time in three weeks. This club has taught me so much about dance music, history, and culture that words can’t describe how honored I feel to play there. I’ll be setting the mood from 10-midnight; would love to see you on the floor!

p.s. the global swing shirt was a souvenir from my first night at smartbar, right after my 21st birthday. Still wear it all the time every summer! taken in Smartbar Chicago by @deanraymond01

We’ve detected unidentified transmissions from the Land of Jack. Please report to @sunscinema 6/13 at 9:30pm. This is not a drill. This is not a drill!

Coming in from NYC we have @sweater.on.polo , here to deliver a hardware live set capturing the true spirit of 80’s House. His sound is futuristic and psychedelic, with references to the atmospheric disco of New York, old school jack styles of Chicago, and more. Local fav @etherpleaser will close the night out with a special small-room set featuring deep house, hard drum, and sultry club tracks. @deanraymond01 is trekking out from Chicago for a b2b with @nik__olo to kick it off.

Don’t forget your uniform.

More details and presales ($15/$20) available at sunscinema.com 👾

It’s been a year since Spare Parts first graced the Clipper’s letterboard, and we’re celebrating with a very special party.

Whatever you do, don’t call Traxx a DJ. In his own words, behind the decks he is a “Visionary Deknician Beyond Description” and an “artist of sound.” As a man, he is known simply as “duKe… the name that means leadership musically.”

But whatever you call him, his impact on dance music is undeniable. Rooted equally in The Music Box and CBGB, he continues to release music under a catalogue of aliases and collaborative projects—most recently, with his band Nu Vision—frequently on his own label, Nation.

You’ll often hear people describe his sound by rattling off a bunch of genre names, but beneath the labels is a very particular relationship to groove. It simultaneously leans back and lurches forward in a way that makes you sway your head back and forth, then grabs your torso and before you know it you’ve been sucked into a vortex and begin to contort in a frenzied shamanic ritual. Eventually you look up and realize 81 minutes have passed. It’s an emotional journey and an education in music history delivered directly to the body in a way nobody else quite can.

If that sounds appealing, Traxx will conduct a 3 hour sonic service at the California Clipper on Saturday 5/16. Only $5 at the door. taken in The California Clipper by @deanraymond01

Finally got off my ass and trimmed+mastered the recoding from my @smartbarchicago debut. So that’s now on my SoundCloud (link in bio yadda yadda).

Fr though, opening this club was a dream come true and I tried my darndest to do right by its legacy. @danbhood cooked on lights per usual and of course everyone on else on staff upheld the highest of production standards that have kept heads coming back decade after decade.

Anyway I’ll shut up now but also thanks @rubyvlzz for putting squares over all the pics from the night I really like the squares even though they kinda accentuate my horrid DJ neck posture but what can you do. At least we got some squares over Mike in the Serafini Stool (TM) taken in Smartbar Chicago by @deanraymond01

Seasons change, Spare Parts returns.

Mark Grusane is a Chicago original. One of the first DJs to weave post-punk into dance music, his sets move with a logic that’s entirely his own. He rides hypnotic, minimal jack tracks that lock you into a groove he calls “trance”, before pivoting without warning to an obscure disco gem you’ve never heard but immediately love. Which is probably why he calls his label “Disctechno”. Mark is a lifelong digger, record shop legend, and kind human being with a style unlike anyone else’s. He’s played Dekmantel, Panorama Bar, and Nowadays, so you definitely don’t want to miss him in 3 weeks at Spare Parts.

Despite what the name suggests, Grey People is 1 person. Grey People has been collecting records and DJiing for 20+ years, specializing in cohesively mixing tracks that span multiple genres and decades. In addition to DJing, Grey People has released music on a nultitude of labels as well as handling mastering duties for numerous artists and labels.

As usual, 10pm $5 at door all night etc. And thanks @waterproofworm for the incredible art as usual. taken in The California Clipper by @deanraymond01

CHICAGO! Friday, 2/27 we will be tearing up the Clipper with this heavy-hitting lineup of local talent. Coming in hot off our night at Podlasie (early reports are already calling it the party of the year?), we are so ready to sweat all night long…

Kicking things off is Dean Raymond, the brains behind Chicago staple party series Spare Parts. He’s a connoisseur of machine funk, dirty disco, and emotionally bent house music with a post-punk edge—check out his Spin Cycle mix on Redux from back in October for a sample of what he’ll bring.

Next up is Redux’s own Decoder. Their trademark sound has quickly become a favorite on the station, finding itself in the rough-around-the-edges-romanticism which seems so at home in our city. You’ve probably seen them around all number of corners of the local scene before: Laura DJing and performing live as Lorelei and Nayeli fronting hardcore scene favorite Navaja. The full Decoder mix archive is up now on Redux.

Closing out the night is our dear friend Inés. Passionate Chicago dancers will already be intimately familiar with her underground series Work Ethic, carrying the torch of Chicago dance music with reverence for the past and prognostic regard for the future. Grace your ears with her mix from November’s Deepcuts for a taste of her magic.

We’re so excited for the music this lineup will bring, from the first needle drop to the last low-end fade out… come early, stay late, dress to move, c u thereeee by @deanraymond01

@jonathan_d_valdez and I are touching down at the Whistler the night before New Year’s to sling some dubbed-out weirdo house straight out of left field. Make sure not to park your spaceship on Milwaukee past midnight or they’ll ticket you to high heaven. 🖼️🖌️ @waterproofworm by @deanraymond01

Now THAT was a party.

Huge thanks to the dancers, friends, heads, casuals, bar staff, door staff, and snowplow drivers who kept it moving. And of course to Fabiola and Jeremiah for bringing some serious crates.

Watching Spare Parts grow from an idea into something bigger than me has been a real joy. More to come in 2026… by @deanraymond01

Spare Parts is rounding out 2025 with its first special guest from out-of-town!

Fabiola is a New York based DJ/producer who digs deep into the archive of dance music. Her style is versatile + cheeky with depths of acid and bass. Her sonic influences are reflected by the cities she occupies most: Detroit, Miami and New York City. From listening sessions to sweaty dance floors, Fabiola’s sound is known to be eclectic and enticing.

Jeremiah Meece is a DJ, producer, singer, and sound designer who has been releasing music in various forms in Chicago for the last twenty years. The only thing you can be sure to expect is a refusal to stick to the script and confine to a genre—but this time, he’s loaded his crates and thumb drives with the finest punk-funk in all the [Chicago]land.

Dean began “DJing” at age 12 with free software, a YouTube-to-mp3 converter, and his dad’s iTunes library. After moving to Chicago for university, he cycled through several inconsequential jobs at WHPK 88.5 FM before becoming station manager. He now runs Spare Parts at the California Clipper and can frequently be found hogging the front left listening station at Gramaphone. And finally, as usual, 🖌️🖼️ @waterproofworm by @deanraymond01
