‘A man with a van and no plan’

After eighteen delirious hours of driving from London to Marseille, we parked our van in Cours Julien and decided to turn it into a temporary exhibition space for one evening.

Bringing together artworks and a strong spirit of collaboration, One Night in Marseille welcomes creatives who see art as a tool for connection, experimentation, and liberation. The exhibition presents a series of works that, beyond their specific content, highlight the kind of community that only forms when you’re creating in close proximity.

One Night in Marseille engages in a format of non-formalised display that does not have a space in traditional commission models and commercial gallery frameworks. We are reminded that art can also exist within temporary structures, that art does not always have to be circulated commercially. Through this ethos of DIY, One Night in Marseille explores an alternative exhibition format that is rooted in immediacy, generosity and community. Ultimately, the project acknowledges that commercial and temporary formats can co-exist where neither necessarily co-opts the other.

Participating artists include Mel Bernstine, Luca Colagiacomo, Maria Virginia Echenique, Billy Fraser, Baptist Gheeraert, Carmen Grey, Emma Iks, Laurence Kuster, Vincent Matuschka, Nick Öhlo, Tom Ribot, and Florence Sweeney.

ONE NIGHT IN MARSEILLE

Two weeks ago we drove a van from London to Marseille, parked in Cours Julien and turned it into a temporary exhibition space for one evening.

Why? Because the van was empty for 3 hours and in 3 hours ANYTHING is possible…

The project brought together artists from London and Marseille, by sunset the van had become a functioning exhibition and temporary gathering point assembled entirely through collaboration the local art crowd and whoever happened to stop walking.

Thank you to everybody who visited, contributed work, helped install, shared wine, stayed late and became part of it.

Final and most important thank you: for spending a decade hand in hand in madness & always doubling down on the ambition Tom Ribot the true Master!

Join us at 6pm in Marseille on the 22nd of May to mark a milestone.

For a decade, Tom and I have shared studios together, each one built by ourselves and 20 times bigger than the last.

It only feels right to celebrate this new chapter, as Tom relocates to Marseille, with an impromptu exhibition upon our arrival.

The open call invites artists working in Marseille to exhibit alongside the two of us, as well as many others who have also found a home for their practice in this city.

With community building at its core, everyone is welcome to come and see what’s on display and meet one another.

You have 7 days to apply via the simple application form ***see link in bio*** or by getting in touch directly. As the world seemingly closes its doors to one another, with this new chapter we seek to reopen the doors of cultural exchange between the two cities.

This is not the end, but a new beginning of exchange and collaboration.

Above all else: by artists, for artists.
