one of my most anticipated novels of 2026!

R.F. Kuang is always surprising me with her books and how she doesn’t stick to one genre. Taipei Story was slow, character-driven and had train-of-thought style writing. the story seems simple on the surface, but she captures so much with her words, and what she doesn’t say. the themes of identity, belonging and grief made the story felt special and revered almost.

I loved the descriptions + experiences of Taipei: the food, cultural aspects, the heat and humidity, the loneliness of a foreign country. I also like the (often frustrating) interactions and relationships Kuang writes for her female characters; they feel very relatable. I think that’s the beauty of her books: although I can’t understand the experience of living between two cultures as in this book, I still found other things to relate to.

really nothing to dislike about this book, but I understand why not everyone will enjoy it as much as I did. thoughts? 💭 by @dearkatie_

anyone else tapped out creatively? I feel like the closer it gets to Christmas, the more I just want to be lazy 🦥

reading update: I’m halfway through Leave Your Mess At Home by Tolani Akinola and loving it. I’m also slowly reading The Witches of Cambridge by Alice Hoffman, trying to make it last as long as possible. I also finished Switzy yesterday which I devoured!

this book was a total reset and just what I needed 🫶🏼

@stephanieshouseofbooks put me onto A Brain That Breathes, a book that explores the brain and body, and how we can declutter our thoughts and embrace a slower pace. coming off work burnout and a related injury, I really enjoyed this book and got a lot out of it.

i’m practicing box breathing every day, sitting and staring at nothing and getting sunshine on my face in the morning 🌞 i’m not idly picking up my phone as i wait in line, i’m letting thoughts come and go, i’m walking more and i’m trying not to multitask.

some notes i wrote down while reading:
• whatever lives rent-free in your mind is actually costing you breathing space
• our brain is comprised of approximately 100 billion neurons – the same as the amount of stars in the Milky Way
• if you spend three hours a day on your phone, it equates to 10 years of your adult life
• we are single-minded creatures – our brains can only produce one to two thoughts at once
• soft fascination is like downtime for our brains
• we are trapped in a feedback loop of external validation, and it takes some really conscious work to pull back from that and find contentment in the ordinariness of our own lives (!!!) by @dearkatie_

Dolly all the Time was hyped up perfectly! 🫶🏼

fake dating (my fave trope, especially when they’re rich), Rhode Island with a bit of Boston setting, adorable characters and wholesome vibes. it was the perfect read to get me excited about spring and warmer weather 🌞

reading a Japanese book 🤝 reading a Japanese book in Japan

I’m enjoying Hooked way more than Butter! it’s a story set in Tokyo, focusing on two women and their newfound friendship, although ’friendship‘ is a real stretch. i’m hoping it gets more and more twisted as the book goes on.

what I read in july 🍒✨🤎

for some reason, I always read the best books in the middle of the year. The Calamity Club went straight to #1 book for the year (so far) 🥰 i also loved Girl on Girl, The Book Club for Troublesome Women, Trust and They All Fall in Love at the End.
