#whatthisweek

I feel like so far this year, my reading has been slow and instead of fighting it, I’m embracing it 💫

22/23 Jess would have sped through a book that wasn’t pacy, just to get it over with and move on. But 24 Jess, is embracing the lull and acknowledging that I’m not prioritizing reading and that is 100% okay!

Instead I have been getting sh@$ done! I’m ticking stuff off my life admin, small biz and enjoying being in my crafting era instead.

Reading: Fiction- Tom Lake. It is as beautiful as everyone says. Non-fiction- Rise Sister, Rise

Listening on Audio- Atomic Habits. Loving it!

Watching: Boy Swallows Universe is the plan this week!

Tell me what you’re reading this week 📖

it’s about time I did the #midyearbookfreakouttag seeing as we’re now at the end of July (!!) can you believe it.

It wasn’t until I counted that I realised how few books I’ve read so far this year compared to all you voracious readers out there! But that’s alright, we all move at our own pace. Anyway, here’s a summary so far:

Books read: 15

Best book(s) you’ve read so far in 2023: Yellowface, Age of Vice, All That’s Left Unsaid, Best of Friends

New release(s) you haven’t read but want to: The Rachel Incident & Chain-gang All Stars (after seeing @paulineisreading’s tag!)

Most anticipated release(s) of the second half of the year: don’t have any on my radar at the moment! But let me know below if there are any I should know about ☺️

DNFs: 2 so far - Sweetbitter and The Sympathizer

Biggest disappointment: The Sympathizer 😞 I had such high hopes for this one seeing as it won a Pulitzer but I think the style just didn’t work for me!

Biggest surprise: wasn’t expecting to enjoy The Happy Couple as much as I did!

Favourite new author(s): R.F. Kuang hands DOWN. She’s proven that she can write literally anything!!

book(s) that made you cry: All That’s Left Unsaid. And on public transport no less 🥲

book(s) that made you happy: Pineapple Street and Crushing had me snickering, but I wouldn’t say either are necessarily happy books 😅

thank you sm @non.snowflake @oloffffy @thelitlist__ @roe.reads @linzthebooklover for tagging me please forgive me for taking weeks to get on it 🫡

𝙈𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙧𝙚 : it’s been a real mix so far but I’d have to say fantasy is taking the lead now.

𝘼𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 : 4.1

5 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 : the redgum river retreat and the prison healer series

𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙩 𝙧𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧 : the prison healer

𝘽𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 : just the nicest couple

𝙈𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 : Fling by Joseph Murray

Kept is nice and short and simple because well… I really haven’t read much this year 😎
