is delighted to share Rosetta’s first published piece of designwriting, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭, featured in the wonderful journal 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘛𝘦𝘹𝘵 - 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 🌀 #6 𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘴 ✂ 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 🥲

‘This essay takes as its starting point a typographic accident: a “widow” spotted on the top of a page of Kate Briggs’ book 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 (Fitzcarraldo Editions, 2017). According to the conventions of graphic design, this solitary word should not have been there. But what if this stray word is not a mistake, but a message? What does it tell us about the illegitimate child in the quotation from Madame Bovary, from which it dangles? Reflecting on widows, orphans and hyphens, Rosetta explores the margins of the text and brings to life a shadow world of typography and print. Written and designed as a fragment of a novel, the essay showcases a practice in which graphic design and literary writing shape meaning together.’

Finally sharing our contribution to the April issue of FORUM+

‘Double or nothing. A duet on mothering and artistic research’. A written duet between a graphic designer and a singer, bending over the shattered efforts to rhyme with a newborn. On fragmented thoughts, halted reading, a failing voice. On how we tried to compose and recompose ourselves postpartum and slowly found our way back into practice, although in an altered shape and shade.

This is 𝒟𝑒𝒶𝓇 𝑅𝑒𝒶𝒹𝑒𝓇, 𝒜𝒹𝒹𝓇𝑒𝓈𝓈𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒜𝓊𝓉𝒽𝑜𝓇𝓈𝒽𝒾𝓅 𝒯𝒽𝓇𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽 𝒢𝓇𝒶𝓅𝒽𝒾𝒸 𝒟𝑒𝓈𝒾𝑔𝓃, my PhD dissertation of my doctoral project at @luca.schoolofarts , under the guidance of Dr. @tom_van_imschoot & @jorisverdoodt , Dr. @kim_gorus and Salome Schmuki.

The letters in this book were all sent by post, except the first and the last.
Through the graphic design practice of Dear Reader, they tell a story about the materiality of writing, the relationship between form & content, the search for collaboration and the position of the graphic designer.
The letters are arranged chronologically and cover a period of roughly seven years. Reading & designing and writing letters alternated, flowed into each other, and created the desire for a polyphonic novel.
