🎓 A singer and a graphic designer meet at a doctoral defence and find themselves simultaneously heavily pregnant during the finalization of their own doctoral research.

✉️ After giving birth, Eva (the graphic designer) encounters obstacles in her return to reading and writing – practices through which she had previously oriented her research-oriented design practice. The need to reach out brings her to write Mariske (the singer) a letter.

🧩 In "Double or nothing. A duet on mothering and artistic research", consisting of two letters, they bend themselves over the shattered efforts to rhyme with a new-born baby. How to compose and recompose oneself postpartum when writing has halted due to the fragmentation of thoughts and time?

𖦹 For both, these writings enable a return to their practice, although in an altered shape and shade.

⿻ This essay presents itself as a doubling, a polyphonous autotheoretical reflection on the interaction between motherhood and research in the arts.

✍️ Mariske Broeckmeyer is a singer and works as a postdoctoral assistant at the Department of Cultural Studies at KU Leuven. In 2022 she obtained a PhD in the Arts from LUCA School of Arts: Unvoicing Migraine: A Study of The Failing Voice. As a singer and sound artist Mariske has released multiple albums (WERF Records) and created many sound exhibitions.

✍️ Eva Moulaert is a graphic designer and works as a post-doctoral assistant at the graphic design department of LUCA School of Arts, Ghent. In 2025 she obtained a PhD in the Arts from LUCA School of Arts: Dear Reader, Addressing Authorship Through Graphic Design. Eva runs her own design studio Dear Reader in Brussels.

Dear Anneleen, a letter by Eva Moulaert

In a letter to her friend Anneleen, graphic designer Eva Moulaert reflects on her fascination with the materiality of writing. Through a visit to a graphologist and the digitization of her own handwriting for Apologie van het schrift, she explores the interplay between form and content and the role of the graphic designer.

Here is a short extract:
‘[…] Did I tell you that Willem and I went to see a graphologist? It’s hard to justify why I insisted on this encounter. Willem would not be pleased with a graphological reading of his essay. In his essay, he follows Roland Barthes, who firmly rejects the idea that handwriting is an authentic expression of who we are: “L’écriture, expression de la personnalité? Vraiment?” Barthes claims to have at least three types of handwriting that do not depend on his personality or state of mind, but rather on the kind of reader he’s addressing. Apparently, his handwriting changes depending on whether he’s writing letters, taking notes, or composing theoretical texts. As a graphic designer, I also believe that it’s best to make the formal dimension fit the content. Although this reasoning is also practical in nature: to convince a client, it’s important to justify formal decisions, otherwise the conversation easily gets bogged down in disputes about what’s beautiful and what’s ugly. […]’

The Beautifier (l’Enjoliveur) project, TOUR 3

Once again we crossed the Gaucheret neighborhood with our studio floor in public space looking for beautifiers. We observed, copied and rubbed details on the street. Passersby were invited to draw directly on the platform. Everything got permanently carved into the red surface driving around to share and further expend it’s collection ‘Enjoliveurs’.

The Beautifier (l’Enjoliveur) project, TOUR 2: LA GRANDE TOMBOLA

All the painted numbers are varnished for the festive vernissage in the evening. Pancakes are baked and sugared. Numbers are drawn. And everyone leaves with a house number from the neighborhood.

The Beautifier (l’Enjoliveur) project, TOUR 2

After a first round that included numerous encounters, we wanted to practice some more concrete artistic practices in public. We started with the craft of painting and copied house numbers of the neighborhood on the scrap wood from our cart.
During these four days we got helped by numerous youngsters of the neighborhood, random passersby and students of @grafischontwerpgent

With the publication of A+ Circular Plans, my journey with @aplusarchitectureinbelgium comes to a full circle.
For 14 years I had the privilege of co-producing 80+ issues of the magazine as part of the editorial board, and later contributing to the lectures and exhibitions program at BOZAR. During that time I witnessed the coming of age of Belgian architecture: from the early days of the Bouwmeester culture to today’s internationally recognized Baukultur.
Some highlights: Space, Sex and Gender, The Village, [re]work, Small Escapes, and finally Circular Plans. Themes that crossed borders and helped present Belgian architecture to the world.
I’m grateful to all the editors-in-chief, graphic designers, board members, and the whole A+ team for the inspiring collaborations. Closing this chapter opens new ones at KU Leuven and PLUSOFFICE.

MY BOOKS IN DUTCH IN BELGIUM
AT HET BALANSEER:

HELBLAUW, 2018

I ❤️ @touchdesigner
