This was one of the first works I made when in residency in Jingdezhen, China @jdzinternationalstudio @taoxichuanartcentre

It was the first work created in Jade Master porcelain, I utilised this work as a test for the works to come, learning about it's plasticity and sculptural qualities.

I became obsessed with this porcelain and was always in awe of the 'glow' of it when I opened the kiln...

Now in a private collection in Jingdezhen,China

Ballarat Potters 2026 continues this weekend. One fabulous potter in the show worth knowing about is…Debbie Hill.

Read her artist statement here:

My works – Chaotic Destiny, Cosmos and Divine Chi - were inspired by the research that I was undertaking prior to my residency in Jingdezhen, China.

All the works incorporate elements of mythology and ritual. Each work has components from forms that I had photographed while travelling and the subsequent research I undertook to explore how I could incorporate this information into a sculptural format.

Each is also looking at the minutiae in the environment, the forms and patterns we tend not to notice in everyday life, but which offer so much. All works are hand built Porcelain with some also having midfired black clay additions.

Ballarat Potters 2026 is on until the 27th September, open every weekend 11-4 or by appointment. Email for an appointment.

While on my residency in Changsha China I had the opportunity to collaborate with a local craftsman Mr Zhang.
He supplied me with hand dug clay from the area where he lives and works.
I also selected from his glaze tests the ancient glazes he makes based on historical information.
After making, drying and glazing 4 pieces, he took them to his studio and fired them in his wood kiln. I had the opportunity to visit and see where the work was being fired...such a amazing space.
Sadly the works weren't ready before I headed home, but I've got the pictures and one of the pieces is going to be sent 🥳
This was such a fabulous experience, especially for a non glazer like me 😁.

Responding to the Tongguan Historic Kiln in Changsha, China during my recent residency at Changsha Normal University.
Utilising local clay and glazes I drew from a ship wreck that occurred around 900 AD to interpret that history with a contemporary aesthetic. After being postponed the show officially opens on Sunday with 100 artists from China and international artists including me, @my_pottery_life_junho and An Tae Gyan. I'm humbled to be part of this extraordinary exhibition at the Tongguan Museum and for the hospitality and patience I was shown while there.
Hopefully I'll get some better photos than mine!

This was my original post that due to issues with the internet....blah blah...I was unable to post while there. So here's the first instalment of images.

It's been a very busy couple of weeks since arriving in Changsha, China for my residency at Changsha Normal University.
An incredibly huge place with many delightful students and staff plus gorgeous gardens. So not much sightseeing just making and learning about the local clay, ( no porcelain) and responding to the history of the Tongguan Kiln site in the city, blessed to have Yixin @amazinglightsup for guidance and organising. Here's a few pics fom whats been happening very locally (in a city of 10 million people!).

The Unnatural Wold

Hand built Jade Porcelain, Gold Lustre and Chinese hand crafted thread.

Created in Jingdezhen, China @jdzinternationalstudio @taoxichuanartcentre

Plastic is devastating nature.
Ecosystems need a cycle of renewal but, plastic and the way it degrades is breaking this cycle. This is a response to the amount of plastic in our environment. Everyday items have been embossed onto the Porcelain.

Fates and Dragons

Probably my favourite work made on my residency at @taoxichuanartcentre.

This was incredibly difficult to make and get into the kiln, but with many slow steps and up and down many steps to kilns and with some advice from @yimin_zang regarding the firing, I managed to get this work completed.

It's now in Taoixchuan art collection...and maybe someday I'll get to see it again.
