GENESIS OF GODDESS ON THE RUNWAY, newsletter continued . . .

I loved getting paid for creativity and intuition. My favorite part of the gig was using my spidey sense, when that chill down my spine appeared, when I knew instantly that this model or actor had “It.” That might be why telepathy is woven throughout Goddess on the Runway. You need a touch of supernatural intuition to succeed as a talent rep. During those years, I also side hustled as a script doctor, so I was able to scratch my writing itch. It was a thrill to get my hands on film and TV scripts long before the projects came out.

It was no surprise when MTV came knocking to film their reality show Eighth and Ocean at my workplace. Viewers were fascinated by the daily lives of models and actors, but the players that really stole the show were the bookers.

The camaraderie and friendship with my agency colleagues extends to this day. We came of age together, learned to stand up for ourselves, and had daily experiences so wild they were considered too unrealistic for Penguin Random House. When PRH offered me a book deal for Braless in Wonderland, my YA novel based on my experiences in the biz, I had to edit out some of those events.

This time, in my Godssey Models series, starting with Goddess on the Runway, you'll see some of that redacted material. Truth is stranger than fiction, with way more shenanigans to boot.

GENESIS OF GODDESS ON THE RUNWAY - Part 2

In the 1990s, I was an agent at one of the world’s most prestigious model and talent agencies. It was the Age of the #Supermodel, and agency life in Miami was equal parts glamour and chaos. Sure, there were the fun days, like casting talent for films like The Birdcage and The Bodyguard, or booking models for high fashion editorials. Then there were the tragic days, such as the shock of Gianni Versace’s murder, a lovely man whom I regularly saw at the News Café, sipping cappuccino and reading magazines.

Every day, the drama was relentless. Models who didn’t make the cut followed me into the bathroom and tried to hand me their composite cards under the stall door. (Sometimes you have to take no for an answer, am I right?) Models ripped casting sign-up sheets off doors so other models would get lost. Literally. A rival booker threw a stapler at my head. For about a year, I stepped over the same passed-out movie star who owned the popular nightclub next to our office. In between castings and bookings, models often floated through our office in various stages of undress. Some were well-known, public figures. It was a decade of surreality.

My job meant being the middleman between the talent and the clients. There was plenty of laughter, as well at least one "dukes up" interaction daily. Did I make big bucks? No. But did discovering great talent make it all worth it? Also, no. So, why did I do it? Because my position gave me gold in 1990’s Miami: access. I had direct lines to advertising executives, casting directors, film producers, and editorial teams at international fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle, W, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, you name it. In the fifteen-block stretch of our SoBe Queendom where the model and film business reigned, I never waited in line at a restaurant or club, never paid for a ticket to see a play or concert. The VIP rooms at night spots were a safe space for celebs, because cell phones didn’t have cameras then. My colleagues and I were smack in the middle of a Moment, one with an impact we didn’t realize until much later.
