Full disclosure — Judaism and my Jewish heritage have only recently become an important part of my identity. The line above is from my essay “Jew-ish” in the anthology On Being Jewish now (edited by the indefatigable @zibbyowens ) that was published in October of 2024. Being asked to contribute to this important book, and writing about how it felt to be Jewish, was a significant part of my reconnecting to my Jewish identity.

This month I will continue to celebrate my Jewish heritage and spotlight incredible Jewish authors, many of whom you can also find in the pages of OBJN.

You know I’m a sucker for throwback trends. In 2016, I was finishing my MFA in creative writing at Sarah Lawrence. I had a kid in kindergarten and I was working on my first book.

Today? I have a kid graduating college(!!!), and other kids looking at colleges. My SIXTH book is about to publish this summer. I traded in my Coke Zero for Fresca.

And the best thing is not something I could fit on this little post - it’s the group of author friends I’ve made in the last ten years. I’ve grown as a writer, and it’s in part due to the incredible women I’ve been able to call friends and mentors 💕

Do you ever wake up and think I don’t know if I can do this?

To be honest, that’s how I felt yesterday on the way to Delray. Depleted. Devastated. Down.

But being in conversation with extraordinary, empowering author friends @lisabarr18 @debbierfischer @talia.carner was soul nourishing. Thank you @lindarosenauthor for facilitating an incredible panel discussion for this chapter of the Brandeis National Committee. What a packed room filled with love, light, curiosity, and connection.

I’m so proud of our bestselling book, ON BEING JEWISH NOW—thank you @zibbyowens for making it happen. Sending love to our fellow contributor @rachelleunr who lives in Australia.

We talked about antisemitism. We spoke our truths. We shared our stories. We encouraged others to do the same. One conversation, one story, one word at a time.

FaceTimed with our kids last night. As we lit our menorahs, I thought to myself, today truly embodied light. And we must keep shining it. 💜🕯️

Still trying to process the Bondi Beach massacre of Jews celebrating Chanukah on the beach, and the Brown University shooting. Heartbreak and devastation doesn’t begin to capture it.

As someone who covered t@rr@r extensively as a young journalist, I do know one thing: t@rror knows no boundaries.

Yesterday’s book event in Delray for the bestselling anthology ON BEING JEWISH NOW at the Trails of Delray chapter of the Brandeis National Committee was just what I needed: A panel of Jewish authors discussing the importance of standing strong and fierce in the face of evil, hate, and surging antisemitism.

We lit candles to honor the memories of our brothers and sisters who were murdered on Bondi Beach AND celebrated the joy of Chanukah.

Being Jewish these days is having to hold both: the pain and the joy.

Here with co-panelists: Linda Rosen, Talia Carner, Dara Levan, and Debby Fischer. It was a powerful, deeply meaningful convo for a packed house. Thank you for everyone who showed up — the books sold out.

And later … Casa Barr had a beautiful little neighborhood Chanukah party — Major dreidel gambling with the 11-and-under crowd. FYI: the five-year-old slayed, taking home a treasure trove of chocolate gelt. 👊🕎👊

Happy Chanukah to those who are celebrating. Here’s to the beauty of tradition. Hard as the t@rr@rists may try, they will NEVER take that away from us. Light ALWAYS shines through the darkness. 💙🙏✡️🕎🇮🇱🇺🇸👊

🥳 Woo-hoooooo!!! How great to see On Being Jewish Now on the USA Today list for week 25! And Israeli bestselling author and OBJN contributor Lihi Lapid’s novel which we acquired the U.S. rights for and published through @zibbypublishing!! (That was a sentence fragment. Whatever.)

They both make great holiday gifts for anyone making a gift guide or already shopping! Just saying. 🤔
