This post requires backstory. Almost 10 months ago, life took a turn. In the space of a few weeks, EVERYTHING went wrong - the kind of wrong that gives you vertigo every time you wake and recall what’s happening.What started as a slightly suss lump on our then-eight-year-old’s neck turned into a very suss lump on her tonsil, turned into an exploratory tonsillectomy and then a diagnosis of non-hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was, frankly, a grim time for the whole family. Not least for our daughter, who soldiered through months of tests, scans, lumbar punctures, surgery, rounds and rounds of chemo and immunotherapy and (most devastatingly of all) missing ALL of term 4. But. BUT! The kindness! From every direction; an absolute onslaught of care. The nurses and doctors of @rchmelbourne . The allied health people. The hospital school. The pink hospital volunteers. An army of friends and family. And all the non profit bodies who move mountains to make this kind of ordeal feel more like an extra special holiday camp experience than a bitterly unfair endurance test. @challengecancer @koalakids @camp_quality @redkitecharity . Until we ended up here I had no idea all these superheroes walked among us, everyday. So anyway: today our daughter rang the bell. Clear scans. End of treatment. End of chapter. We brought wildly inadequate thank you cake and so many feelings it’s difficult to breathe. She’s officially the hardest-core nine-year-old you could ever hope to meet and I am never going to be so blissfully unaware ever again. We are the luckiest, the absolute luckiest, in the world.💖 by @debdoeswords

@kidlitvic brought the magic ✨Such a fabulous day—huge thank you to the organisers for bringing this community together so beautifully. I love drawing portraits — especially when they capture a quiet moment like this between father and son.It reminds me of those relaxed, summery, slightly magical moments lying on the grass looking up at the clouds. (I’m not quite ready for the shift into cooler weather).I also got to draw so many versions of Bellamy and Pa across different moments in the book ‘Boldilocks’, which made them feel really real to me (even with the spectacular hair).Boldilocks is not just a book about hair- it’s about LOVE, SUPPORT and ACCEPTANCE. 💙💙💙💙It written by @debdoeswords , published by @ekbooksforkids #kidlitart #picturebookcharacter #portraitillustration #australianillustrator #kidlitillustrator by @debdoeswords
