$10 is cheap for a picture book. Like, almost robbery cheap, if you knew how much of that actually goes to the creators. So, if you can get away with supporting your local bookstores, go for gold. But if $10 gets more beautiful books into your home, that's still a win. Big W generally has a wider selection, but this is the spread at Kmart and Target in a smaller regional town. Well this was a fun launch! THE CALLERS is a brilliant middle grade fantasy series, which all started with the premise: What if you could summon anything you want just by thinking about it? But then found out everything you ‘called’ was being taken from somewhere else — would you still do it? THE JOURNEY HOME is the third and final instalment in this incredible series and it was launched in style today at @little_bookroom with a fun ‘calling’ guessing game, door prizes and an awesome vine craft activity which had the kids enthralled. I plan on diving into this one tonight along with a book cookie — can’t wait to see how it all ends! 📚🌿🔥 Long weekend reading sorted! Biggest congrats to @kiahthomas on the launch of her third and final instalment in the cracking middle-grade CALLERS series, 'The Journey Home'. It was such a joyous book launch in celebration of Kiah's fabulous storytelling @little_bookroom, where a packed house of fans were treated to a Q&A with the wonderful podcasters/authors @pamelaueckerman and @julieannegrasso_books of The Middle Grade Mavens podcast, plus a reading by Kiah. Some fun craft activities and yummy goodies were on offer, too. What a joy it was this afternoon to be at the launch of the latest book in middle grade fantasy series - The Callers : The Journey Home by Kiah Thomas. This was Kiah’s first ever book launch event, and she was asked all the tough questions by @pamelaueckerman and @julieannegrasso_books The Little Bookroom is a wonderful celebration of children’s books - with some books for the grown ups thrown in - and it is always a joy to visit. For this week’s Sunday Shelfie, I’ve chosen some fractured fairytales and clever fairytale reinventions — stories that twist, retell and play with the tales we think we already know. From wolves with bad reputations to crocodiles in place of bears, to a celebration of natural locs — these books invite children to look at familiar stories in completely new ways. Some use a title to tell a different story like Goldilocks to Boldilocks while others reinvent the traditional tales. @kidlitvic brought the magic ✨ Such a fabulous day—huge thank you to the organisers for bringing this community together so beautifully. I loved catching up with old friends, making some new ones, and finally seeing so many familiar faces off-screen. The panels were packed with insight from publishers and agents- I’m feeling reassured that AI is not taking over (at least not anytime soon) and I’m inspired to dive into my next books. I love drawing portraits — especially when they capture a quiet moment like this between father and son. It reminds me of those relaxed, summery, slightly magical moments lying on the grass looking up at the clouds. (I’m not quite ready for the shift into cooler weather). I also got to draw so many versions of Bellamy and Pa across different moments in the book ‘Boldilocks’, which made them feel really real to me (even with the spectacular hair).
