What a huge honour and massive pleasure to host the 2026 Hungerford Award announcement event last night for @fremantlepress . Twenty years ago I too was shortlisted for this career-changing award, and I’ve never looked back. To share the stage last night with other Hungerford alumni – superstar @natashalesterauthor , the gorgeous @fi_wilkes and @_howardmckenziemurray_ – who were all so generous with the audience, and then watch as winner @greg_taylor_author made an emotional, gracious acceptance speech for his winning manuscript, Wildlife of the Open Eucalyptus Forests, was truly wonderful. Huge congratulations to Greg and the other brilliant shortlisted authors, @harrisdj , @marija_gimbutas_stands_tall , and @michalstonewriter and heartfelt thanks to the Hungerford sponsors @fremantlepress @cityoffremantle @centreforstories @totallylitfreo @neweditionbookshop for, frankly, everything. Thanks also to the wonderful photographer @tashihall for the photo of Greg and brilliant vibes every time I see her. by @debfitzpatrick9

Artworks of the central desert ❤️ What an incredibly special kind of serendipity that my trip to Alice Springs coincided with the once a year art exhibition, Desert Mob. Absolutely wowed by the incredible talent on display 🧡 @desert_mob @alicespringstowncouncil @araluenartscentre Huge thanks to Bronwyn at @redkangaroobooks for taking me to this 💛 by @debfitzpatrick9

I couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome by the people of Darwin and Alice Springs this week as I toured their beautiful schools, communities and country. Things kicked off with a writing workshop for adults at Casuarina Public Library @cityofdarwinlibraries – so well attended and inspiring for all of us in the room.

Then I got to work talking tawny frogmouths, gliders and kelpies, visiting the gorgeous primary & high school students and their librarian Kathy @theessingtonschool; primary students at @HaileyburyRendallSchool and their teacher-librarian Tara; and the students at Nightcliff Primary School and their teachers, especially Wendy.

The bookshops in Darwin were so friendly and super-well-stocked with my titles!! Huge thanks to Andy at @the_bookshop_darwin and Julia and Eliot at @qbdbooks

None of this would have been possible without the hard work, professionalism and kindness of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (Northern Territory) @cbca_nt Massive thanks to the incredible volunteers: Mary, Linnell, Rozie, Sandy, Wendy and Pat, who drove me everywhere, organised my school visits, showed me the sights, took me out for dinner and became friends. Mary, you are a queen.

Next stop was Alice Springs where I had a treat working with 30 or so students via the School of The Air and then a day at the lovely Ross Park Primary School (thanks so much @al_royesy_morty).

While in Alice, I was shown around by the incredibly generous and talented Bronwyn at @redkangaroobooks who went above and beyond, taking me out to see the stunning Central Australian surroundings, wildflower-spotting, and to great food spots. Bronwyn also has heaps of my books in her gorgeous bookshop in the Todd Mall, so pay her a visit!

Honestly, thank you everyone so much!!

This is the wonderful Nicole from @melvillecity Willagee Library, one of several outstanding library staff I have the huge pleasure of working with on the @melvillecityartsandevents WRITE CLUB project with the truly gorgeous Year 6s of @caralee.community.school We have now held 7 of our 8 creative writing sessions and the students have SMASHED IT this year with their wild, joyful creativity and big-hearted effort. I couldn’t do this work without the support and practical help of Nicole and her library colleagues, @_akira_akira , Pearl and Zoe, so a MASSIVE thank you to you all for everything you do in the classroom alongside me. ALSO!!! With Children’s Book Week events currently starting to roll out, Nicole is sporting her beautiful @briony_stewart designed ‘Symphony of Stories’ inspired jewellery … This is the gorgeous Aggie-May @erstwilder brooch. These characters were created and designed by our very own, ridiculously talented @briony_stewart for the Children’s Book Council of Australia @cbcaustralia How on earth I get to work with all these deadset legends is beyond me – but I’ll take it!!!! 😁 Happy Children’s Book Week/Month/Term everyone!!!!!
