Something big is happening behind the scenes in the deck industry.

What started as a small internal project to solve a problem in our own sales and design process has started gaining serious momentum.

The original goal was simple:

Build a better way for deck builders to design, present, price, and communicate projects with homeowners.

Because let’s be honest — most builders are still forced to piece together sketches, spreadsheets, supplier quotes, rendering tools, takeoffs, and gut-instinct pricing just to get a project across the finish line.

That process is broken.

And builders deserve better.

What started as one builder trying to solve that problem has now gained the support of one of the largest and most respected organizations in the building-products industry.

This is a company with decades of history, a culture built around material innovation, and the scale to influence how construction products move through the market.

They saw what we were building.

They saw the problem we were trying to solve.

And they believed in the potential impact enough to help push it forward.

That matters.

Because this is no longer just about building software.

This is about creating better systems for the builders who care about doing things right.

Better design conversations.
Better homeowner confidence.
Better material clarity.
Better project communication.
Better sales tools.
Better execution.

The goal is not to replace craftsmanship.

The goal is to give craftsmanship more leverage.

The future of this industry will not be won by the cheapest estimate.

It will be won by the builders who can communicate value clearly, design smarter, build stronger, and give homeowners more confidence from the very first conversation.

That is what we are building toward.

What started small is becoming something much bigger.

And I believe the deck industry is ready for it.

People keep asking what I've been up to...

...and why i just disappeared from the deck world.

I had to take over another project.

No camera tricks or fancy filters here. While I took a break from building decks to build something we will all benefit from. Currently measuring in at 1,696 files and approximately 743,000 lines of code, we have the @deckmasterj proprietary design platform for builders.

This platform turns quoting decks into a unique design experience for clients who get to now watch their project come to life in real-time. Proprietary generative logic flows produce autonomous designs bound by the products you select, not your product knowledge.

Design the shape of your space and the products to use, and the platform does the rest. Places, counts, sort, costs, itemizes, renders, and exports every board, railing panel, and part to reproduce the design you've made.

To support the builders who will best benefit from this new workflow, i am working on integrating and seeking partnerships with all the major brands so you dont have to worry about being supported in the products YOU like.

Amazing Teams = Incredible Results

This room was a blank canvas Monday at 3pm when I arrived. The room had been cleared and the walls white washed. First drop of materials was delivered about 4pm. Build team arrived around 5pm.

This video was recorded Friday morning at 10am.

6 decks with railings, 1 covered pergola, about 16 lights over 2 transformers with 3 zones, 2 planter boxes, and a deck with curved features all completed in about 4 days.

Dont get me wrong, these were not normal days as this was no normal project. My team mates were able to come and go as they desired but since the project was my responsibility, I couldnt relax until it was done. I spent 74 hours on site in just under 5 days

Knowing every project has issues at some point and we had a HARD finish date of mid day Friday, I basically lived in the unit for the week. The adjacent units were incredibly accommodating to us running tools 24/7 for the week to maintain the schedule.

Reps from brands we would call on went above and beyond to help us keep our deadline. @inlite_barret personally delivered some parts from over 3 hours away 🤜💥🤛

Collaborative projects like this are some of the most fun projects I get to work on. Industry professionals from all roles and ranks get involved to make them happen. While there were 4 builders on this one that saw it completed, there were nearly 2 dozen people that contributed towards getting this done on time. If not for the support of my team, this would not have been possible.

Thank you all! taken in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina by @deckmasterj

Everyone wants a 🏆 but few will do the work

In my career I've noticed a lot of trends. One of which is universal across the board. Everyone wants to be "the best" but very few do the work.

No matter what what your career path, or where you live, the best advice anyone could ever receive, is to not be afraid of the work. The work is where all the magic happens. Its where the lessons are learned, mistakes are made, actual growth happens.

The challenges you face will break the person you once were to be molded into a stronger version of yourself. The lessons build character and relationships. You will gain skills and perspectives that no one will ever be able to take from you.

On this project, when I designed and sold it, I had 7 people aligned for a 4 night project. Before the project even started, I lost 4 but gained 2 more. The first night we started with 5 people, but lost another the first night.

My team that stayed worked some long days and nights to get this done. While I made sure my team got rest through the week, I stayed on site to keep working. We started Monday at 5pm and left Friday morning at 10am.

In that time I personally spent 74 hours on site working because refuse to accept excuses instead of delivery results. While I basically lived in the unit all week, it still wouldn't have been possible without the support of my team on this project.

HUGE shoutouts to

@decksanddocks for the opportunity and hospitality while working away from home

@deck_dialogue_ for all your help on and off site coordinating details of this project

@timbertechjeff & @timbertechjoe for helping locate more heat blankets

@fourth_fold & @odio_custom.builders & @echowhiskeyoscar for traveling out of town and putting in the long days to help me make this possible

Oops...

No matter how long you've been doing something, we're all still human. Mistakes are bound to happen. The fact that they happen isnt what separates professionals from amateurs. What separates them is how quickly a professional identifies it, adjusts the plan to resolve the mistake, and gets back on track.

Don't let the mistakes beat you.

Context:

I had the pleasure of organizing and overseeing the deck build and lighting for the new @decksanddocks Design Center in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

On this project, I was able to do some field testing for the new heating system from @krvkit. Let me start with how awesome it was having a full 20' encapsulated heat blanket setup for deck boards and railing components. I was able to effectively heat a full railing kit of 4x 8' parts all at once to really speed up that process.

However, I was in crunch time and had less than 24 hrs to finish the project so I was running a heatcon and @krvkit side-by-side to blast through all my bending. During that time, I opened the heatcon blankets to pull the boards and left the R13 on top of the far end of the krvkit setup.

The krvkit has a temp sensor to monitor the internal temp of envelope but when I left the R13 on the half that was unmonitored, I effectively created two environments in a single system with 1 sensor on only 1 of those environments. The results, the unmonitored half of the system was retaining the heat much more than the half with the monitor so the material was being overheated.

Totally my own fault and had nothing to do with the performance of the @krvkit. In fact, it actually showed the kit still has untapped potential in its current configuration. Well done team @krvkit! 👏👏 taken in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina by @deckmasterj

I've been lucky to receive the responsibility of fulfilling the deck portion of the new showroom.

To tackle this one I called on some friends to help and was fortunate to have the @fourth_fold team and some of @odio_custom.builders willing to travel to help get this project done.

Projects like this are possible because of the tremendous amount of support from countless industry pros at every level in the supply chain.

Turning @oc.lumber 2x10s into outside corners

Weekend snapshots of the @oc.lumber planters components for upcoming project. This design utilizes 2x materials, with decking for a 2-tone inset box detail for these planters. No exposed edges to show the guts of any boards.

Only that beautiful cap stock if visible in the end for a flawless finish that should outlast its maker with only some light cleaning as its maintenance over time.
