A useful discussion today at Royal College of Surgeons Ireland in Dublin on one of the biggest opportunities in modern healthcare:

How do we turn innovation into actual patient access?

The science is moving quickly — particularly in diseases such as multiple myeloma.

But approval of a new treatment is not the same as a patient being able to receive it.

The gap may be reimbursement.

But it may also be referral, testing, specialist capacity, clinical-trial access, treatment infrastructure or simply how the pathway is organised.

That is why I think the most important question is not simply:

“How do we fund innovation?”

It is:

“Where is the patient getting stuck, and what do we need to change to get them through that gap?”

The real opportunity is to build pathways that connect innovation, evidence and implementation more effectively — so that advances in personalised medicine reach patients more consistently and more quickly.

For patients, the ultimate measure remains fairly simple:

Did the right treatment reach the right patient at the right time?

#MilesForMyeloma formally kicks off today through Sunday 25th October. Today I start my 'virtual row' and this year it is from Cork Boat Club to DULBC and DUBC in Islandbridge ~258km / 160miles. I will be stopping by several clubs along the way and will wrap up on the water at The Head of the Charles and Head of the Schuylkill Regatta's in the final week. Massive thanks to @corkboatclub and @cliodhna_nolan for being so supportive for the kickoff and @DULBCRowing and @DUBoatClub for their welcome at the finish for the third year in a row. @MyelomaIreland @survivorrowingnetwork
