“Legal, as long as you pay for it.”

@larrynorrisphd, PhD, co-founder of @decriminalizenature on the difference between legalization and decriminalization, with Oregon as the example.

Oregon legalized psilocybin as a therapeutic modality. Not therapy, and not medicine. As Larry puts it, a sunny day at the beach is therapeutic too. But manufacturing and distribution were never decriminalized, and under those terms, picking a mushroom out of the ground or growing your own counts.

Larry’s point: in a legalized state, picking a mushroom and eating it can be a felony. Paying three to five thousand dollars to sit in a licensed service center, with cameras recording every moment of your trip, is not.

That gap is exactly why Decriminalize Nature exists.

Since sprouting in Oakland in 2019, Decriminalize Nature has helped more than 25 cities and counties decriminalize entheogenic plants and fungi. Larry co-leads their national outreach, supporting communities across the US and around the world that want to bring the same change to their local government. He is also co-founder and executive director of ERIE (Entheogenic Research, Integration, and Education) and teaches in the psychedelic certificate program at Starr King School for the Ministry.

At the center of it all is one belief: every person has the unalienable right to develop their own relationship with Nature.
