Artist & designer with a love for the British landscape. My seasonal, botanical watercolours inspire all of my collections and books.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A little look into creating in my Welsh studio.

I’ve shared lots of pictures and videos of my creative space, but here’s a little closer look at some of the different things I create here.

Botanical artwork, paintings inspired by nature, knitting, embroidery, lino printing, ceramic tiles and buttons, and many of the little things you see in between (I’ve been a practicing artist & maker for 40 yrs) — this is where my artwork starts to shape my making, and where it all feeds into my knitted textiles.

My botanical artwork and ceramics, in particular, continually inspire my knitting designs, bringing the two sides of my practice together.

Thank you so much for joining me here. 🤍

Creativity takes time, inspiration and heart, and it certainly doesn’t always align with the algorithms and constant hunger of social media. While I would love to release knitting patterns more quickly — and I treasure the beautiful community that has grown here — I don’t want to lose the spirit of creating from the heart, of sharing a story that is true.

New patterns are coming (and maybe even a bigger project too), but I want to give each design the time and care it needs. What began here in the studio as a series of projects intended to be released as individual knitting patterns has grown into something much more: a body of work that weaves together stories, reverie, art and knitted textiles.

I’ll be sharing my inspirations with you along the way, and I thought this glimpse into the creative process behind the master project for my Botanical Knitting Art & Embroidery retreat this May would be a lovely place to start.

The pattern will be released after the retreat.

Mattress stitch — the neatest, sweetest join.

I absolutely love this technique and use it for all my projects that call for seaming, including my Damask Wrap, coming at the end of May!

This reel shows a few of my favourite seaming moments: first, I’m seaming the Damask Wrap; next, I’m joining all the colour swatches I knitted while designing my book, The Knitted Fabric @laine_magazine , creating a sort of story-wrap of the whole design process. Then, I’m working on the Garden City chapter, and finally, the reel ends with the very meditative seaming of the Butterfly Patchwork Quilt, also from The Knitted Fabric.

Inspired by a recent trip to the cinema with my lovely friend to see Sense and Sensibility, I found myself caught up in a little of Austen’s world and headed out for my afternoon walk in my favourite voluminous dress (and my butterfly cardigan) of course! 🤍🦋

I’m currently in the heady throes of working on a new book with @laine_magazine and, as much as I would love to share all of the creativity, beautiful yarns, artwork, charts and gorgeous threads that are weaving their way into this new collection, I’m having to keep everything under wraps for now.

I was in much the same position when I was busy developing the 15 scarf designs for my book, Cultivate: Knitting the Beauty of Nature, co-written with my very dear friend (and publisher!) @jonnahoo who created five beautiful garment designs for our very special collaboration. I can hardly believe that it’s been two years since the book was published, and I continue to be overjoyed by the response to it.

This winter, I’ll begin formatting the scarf designs from Cultivate as individual downloadable patterns, and I thought this would be a lovely time to revisit some of the stories behind the pieces.

All of the scarf designs in Cultivate are inspired by my botanical and butterfly watercolours, and this is the first in a series of little clips exploring the artistic threads behind my completed knits. Over the next few reels, I’ll be spotlighting individual scarves, sharing a little more about their inspiration and showing you how I love to style and wear these endlessly versatile accessories.

I hope you enjoy this little behind-the-scenes glimpse into the story of Cultivate.

Autumn days call for your favourite knits, and my Victoria Park scarf is still one of my favourite accessories.

The Victoria Park Scarf was inspired by leisurely Sunday walks along the beautiful tree-lined avenues of Victoria Park in Bath when I lived there many magical moons ago.
This is a generously long hand-knitted scarf that can also be used as a wrap, for those crisp autumn and winter days. The cosy, densely knit fabric has a beautifully intricate, tapestry-like look and feel.

You can find the Victoria Park scarf pattern from Ravelry & Etsy.

Wishing you a cosy week 💕

One place has become available for my November retreat!

This November (18th–21st) I’ll be hosting a two day / three night ‘Botanical Art, Design and Embroidery Retreat for Knitters’ at the beautiful, The Angel Hotel @the_angel_abergavenny .

During this technique-packed workshop, I’ll guide you through how to create your own botanical motifs in pastel – no prior drawing experience required. You will then discover how to translate your artwork into clear, versatile botanical embroidery charts, before I take you through the process of designing your scarf layout using your charts. I’ll also explain the importance of considering how negative space forms an integral part of the overall composition. Finally, you will embroider your designs onto your own pre-prepared knitted scarf using Swiss darning.

Based on a project that was originally developed for two very special workshops at London’s V&A museum in 2025, this retreat is designed to nurture your creative spirit while offering ample time to unwind, connect with fellow participants, and enjoy the hospitality of a highly regarded family of local businesses.

Abergavenny is particularly magical in early winter – festive lights twinkling, fires glowing, independent shops to browse, and delicious treats to enjoy – all set against the dramatic landscape of Bannau Brycheiniog (The Brecon Beacons).

Please see my profile Linktree for details on how to sign up. (For any of you who had issues with the link, it has been resolved!)

Sharing these moments of friendship, creativity and the joy of learning new skills is one of the loveliest parts of what I do, and I really hope to welcome you to Wales this November! 🤍

I can’t show you what I’m actually working on just yet, as it’s for my new book with @laine_magazine, but this is definitely the vibe today. 🤍

A quiet moment at my worktable, immersed in the rhythmic pattern of knitting.

I’m Dee Hardwicke, artist, designer & knitter.

Welcome to my creative space, where ideas begin, colours are gathered and stories slowly unfold.

I’m working on something very special here at the moment — a new book with @laine_magazine. I’m keeping the details a secret for now, but I’m so excited to be making it in this space.

You’ll find everything here from my watercolours and knitted swatches to my handmade tiles and buttons, favourite yarns and haberdashery — all the little things that inspire and feed into my knitting designs.

Thank you so much for joining me.
With love, Dee xx

Hello from my little front garden with news that I’ve been bubbling with excitement to share — I’m working on a new book with my wonderful publisher, @laine_magazine !

I can’t even begin to describe my passion for this book — the concept, the artwork that the knitted pieces are evolving from, knitting charts worked out by hand, scribbles, swatches, the yarns I’m working with… everything! I’m completely immersed in this evolving story, albeit a beautifully slow one.

The book is due to be published in late autumn 2027.

I’m keeping the concept and all collection details a complete secret until much later, so for now, here’s a little love for my Clematis, and Achillea Scarves.

The scarf patterns are in Cultivate, the knitting book I co-wrote with the beautiful @jonnahoo . The Clematis and Achillea Scarf patterns will be available this winter.

Sharing a little love for Swiss darning on World Embroidery Day 💕

Swiss darning is my favourite embroidery stitch, and it’s featured here on my Clematis Scarf from Cultivate, my knitting book co-written with @jonnahoo and published by @laine_magazine .

As an artist knitter, Swiss darning allows me to layer texture, movement, and colour to my knitted fabric – like painting with yarn. My knitting and embroidery are inspired by my botanical watercolours, and this stitch gives me the freedom to bring those painterly details to life on my knitted fabric.
