Knowing the warning signs of postpartum preeclampsia saved Deena Shakir’s life.

Deena Shakir is a Partner at Lux Capital, former Partner at GV, former Google product partnerships leader across health, search and AI—and a Lecturer in Management at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

She is also a mother of three who nearly died after giving birth.

When a postpartum headache became a true emergency, Deena’s doctor stayed on the phone, told her to return immediately to labor and delivery, and kept her talking to ensure her brain was still functioning. She recorded voice notes for her children because she did not know if she would survive.

She was having a stroke.

Behind every impressive title is a human story. Deena’s is one of ambition, motherhood, extraordinary resilience—and the importance of taking women’s symptoms seriously.

A week ago, I purchased a book from Amazon called “Leena Mo, CEO.”

The book is about a little girl who dreams up an invention to help with her household chores, especially shoveling snow on cold winter days. She brings her idea to life by tinkering and creating a robot named “Helmy,” which means “my dream” in Arabic. Her invention catches the attention of her neighbors, and soon Leena starts renting out her robot, turning her project into a profitable venture. A true little CEO😌👍🏼

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting the author of this book @deenashakir, who is a mother of three, an entrepreneur, a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a VC known for her groundbreaking investments in women’s health and health equity.

This is a book every parent should read to their children, especially their daughters. I got my copy signed for my future daughter🤍

Young Muslim girls face immense obstacles to success in the dunya and akhirah. Peer pressure focused on physical beauty cause many to lose sight of akhirah goals. Some feel even dunya success with a Muslim identity is out of reach. Believe in Allah ﷻ and then yourself. Even if everyone around says you cannot do or be. Nothing is impossible for Allah ﷻ.

At long last, she’s here! Please meet Leena Mo, CEO. A few years ago I was asked to speak to my daughter’s class about what I do for a living–and I could not find a single children’s book about entrepreneurship, let alone one with a young girl as a protagonist. I vowed then and there to write that book myself, because I want my kids to grow up in a world where being a CEO or investor (especially as a woman of color) is normalized. You can’t be it if you can’t see it.
