Nobody wanted the project. Deena Shakir raised her hand.

An outsider to healthcare, she asked the “dumb questions,” connected work happening across Google and helped launch its first HIPAA-compliant product—laying the groundwork for the next Google Health.

Ambition is often mistaken for hunger. For Deena Shakir, it began with inheritance—not of wealth, but of sacrifice.

Her father risked his life to escape Iraq. Her relatives fought simply for the opportunity to learn. From an early age, Deena understood that education was never something to take for granted; it came with a responsibility to do something meaningful with it.

That conviction carried her from Harvard and Georgetown to the U.S. State Department, Google, GV and her role today as a Partner at Lux Capital and Lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

“I had to pay my good luck forward.”

This is the why behind Deena’s extraordinary ambition—and the purpose beneath every title.

Knowing the warning signs of postpartum preeclampsia saved Deena Shakir’s life.

Deena Shakir is a Partner at Lux Capital, former Partner at GV, former Google product partnerships leader across health, search and AI—and a Lecturer in Management at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

She is also a mother of three who nearly died after giving birth.

When a postpartum headache became a true emergency, Deena’s doctor stayed on the phone, told her to return immediately to labor and delivery, and kept her talking to ensure her brain was still functioning. She recorded voice notes for her children because she did not know if she would survive.

She was having a stroke.

Behind every impressive title is a human story. Deena’s is one of ambition, motherhood, extraordinary resilience—and the importance of taking women’s symptoms seriously.
