When Eli put the 1st version of this track on & asked me if I had any ideas or wanted to mess w/this one, he turned around to see me literally tearing up🥹. Celebrated 4th of July weekend out of the country this year — a much needed change of scenery, escape, and reset.

My boy Tim brought up Afro Nation in the group chat, and I told him, “I’ll meet you out there.”

For a few that know, I didn’t really celebrate my b’day this year. I worked through part of it and was down through the rest. In the month that followed, 3 deaths happened either in my circle, or affecting people directly in it— a reminder that these years are meant to be celebrated, and the people who matter most to us are to be cherished.

I heard the news on the same day I had to catch a long flight. That flight gave me time to reflect on how devastating this loss is to me and to everyone fortunate enough to know Rich as a friend, mentor, cheerleader, or advocate. He poured into people so selflessly, sharing his knowledge, experience, contacts, and jack-of-all-trades expertise. I spoke with him just last month, and we had one of those long conversations about everything. I’m truly going to miss him and already feel the loss on so many levels. I can only hope to be the kind of positive force, encourager, connector, and mentor to others that he was to me. Rich became one of my first music business mentors after Sylvia Rose introduced us while I was a student at Hampton. From the beginning, he believed in me and my work. He guided Delante Murphy and me through setting up our first business license and Entertainment Co, helped me establish my corporation, and later helped me find the bank that approved the mortgage for my first home. At my first ASCAP Awards, he arranged a table for my family and staff to watch me receive my award. Case even performed “Happily Ever After” that night. ❤️ At the reception afterward, he presented my mom and me with my first Gold plaque and taught me how to order and collect the ones that followed. He also signed me up as a Recording Academy member, took me to my first Grammy Awards in 2000 as his guest, introduced me to Ruth Carter and so many accomplished Hampton alumni, arranged a reception for me in LA my first nomination year, and even let me buy his extra Grammy tickets so my whole family could attend the ceremony the year I won. Those are some of the bigger moments, but there were so many more. My heart is heavy wondering if I’ve thanked him enough. I thanked him many times, but writing this reminds me it could never be enough. I thought I had more time. Last Tuesday I realized I didn’t. Thank you, Rich (he always liked when I called him “Rich”). I’ll honor you by paying forward the generosity, encouragement, and belief you gave me so freely. I love you, my fellow Taurus brother. Rest in power, my friend. ❤️🙏🏾🙌🏾✊🏾 by @deepchrish
