Trying something new … and old at the same time. A model of the Empire State Building built by Sean Kenney was what originally inspired me to get into LEGO about 10 years ago and after the hiatus of over a year (due to circumstances beyond my control) a recent trip to NYC inspired me to get back into LEGO and try designing a model of the ESB again.

Coincidentally, Sean Kenney did a newer model of this building last year that is bigger and more detailed. I decided to go in the other direction and try building (digitally for now) a smaller version that is half the scale of my 6’ 3” version (which I still have displayed at home). So this will be around 3 feet tall if built using real pieces and uses SNOT extensively to try to preserve as much detail as possible in the smaller size.

I am still not going to be able to devote as much time to LEGO as I used to in the past, but I want to try exploring various ideas I have for LEGO models including some mosaics and sculptures. Stay tuned! #legoarchitecture #lego #legos #legocreations #empirestatebuilding by @deepshen6

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and fellow AFOL Joe Meno. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person back in 2019, and although this was one of my first times attending a LEGO convention and displaying my MOCs there, Joe was very friendly and supportive and made me feel welcome.

Having your MOCs featured in Brick Journal is one of the great honors for an AFOL and I feel fortunate to have been featured in this magazine twice. It was only when I got to know Joe better that I realized how much of a one-man show Brick Journal was (at least in more recent years) and it is amazing that Joe managed to single-handedly keep it going for over 20 years.

Also, when I started working on my book, Joe was the first person who came to mind for writing the foreword. He was kind enough to oblige, and it was a great honor to have a foreword written by Joe in my book.

The AFOL community owes a huge debt of gratitude to Joe for all his contributions over the years and he will be greatly missed! by @deepshen6

LEGO mosaics are inherently incapable of capturing a lot of fine detail because of the large pixel size (which is basically the size of a 1x1 plate or tile). In order to do justice to something like the iconic poster of the first Star Wars movie, you have to go pretty big. This particular mosaic is 240x160 studs which makes it a little over 6 feet tall. Building a mosaic of this size can be a logistical challenge and I have tried to address that with my program that generates “instructions” in a PDF format. The mosaic can be split into 16x16, 8x8 and 4x4 sections as needed. I still haven’t figured out how to do the instructions when regular plates are used and these are combined into bigger elements (my program can still generate an Ldraw file with the parts optimized within each section). If you have any of these mural-style mosaics you would like to build either by yourself or in a collaborative setting, please feel free to reach out to me and I can help generate the instructions for the mosaic.

What do you think of this news? Unlike some other people, I don’t have a knee-jerk reaction against anything designed using AI. It is true that most of the AI-generated LEGO builds out there are crap, because they use pieces that do not exist or are even practical. But that doesn’t mean that AI does not have a place in the design of LEGO builds. As someone who has spent a lot of time with digital building and dabbled in procedural building (with my programs to create LEGO mosaics and sculptures), I see AI as the logical next step in the evolution of methods to generate LEGO models. Of course, the AI model will have to understand all the different available pieces, their geometry, how they connect to each other and be trained using thousands of real sets (official or otherwise), before it can come up with something interesting that can be built using real pieces. This is definitely an interesting challenge and I am not sure how far LegoGPT goes towards meeting this challenge. Thoughts?

The next evolution in my increasingly complex maze of arches. I don’t find these particularly interesting or creative, but the posts showing them always do significantly better than my regular posts. So if this is what people want, I am happy to oblige (given that lately I have not been finding the time to work on anything new). Also, who knows - with all these different variants, I may eventually land on something elegant enough to build with real pieces.

Where it all started (the classic poster for the first Star Wars movie) … This is a pretty large digital mosaic but I tried a minimalistic style. The base plates are black, of course, but only a third of the stud locations have 1x1 round tiles (in one of 5 possible colors) attached to them, bringing down the part count significantly.

I have been fascinated by all the different isometric patterns that can be created using the @lego 2x2 triangular tiles in various colors. Here’s one that I pretty much hand-crafted in Studio (the use of sub-models made the process a lot less repetitive). It shows 18 cubes that are arranged to form an interesting pattern.

Coming soon is a new series of blog articles titled “Five Easy Pieces” with the first installment hopefully posted in the next week or so. I know there are more than five pieces in the picture, but in the article we will basically be doing deep dives into five relatively recent additions to the LEGO element catalog (along with some related elements also shown in the picture). The first installment will start with some of the smallest and simplest elements and try to understand why LEGO felt the need to create these new designs. What is it about the geometry of these elements that makes them unique and how can you take advantage of this unique geometry in your MOCs? Is there anything you can do with these elements that you perhaps were not able to do before? We will include plenty of examples of the usage of these pieces from official LEGO sets. Starting to work on a new skyscraper model after a long time. This is an interesting new skyscraper coming up in New York City (anyone knows which one it is?). This model is still quite incomplete. The actual skyscraper has a distinctive base which I have not represented here. It also has cross bracing similar to the Hancock Tower in Chicago and I have to figure out the best way to represent that at this scale. But overall it is an interesting build with half stud offsets used extensively for the tapers in both directions (left to right of the front facade and bottom to top on the sides). Now I need to work on finishing up this digital model and decide if I want to build it using real pieces. Stay tuned!
