Book Review and Giveaway

1/8 The LEGO Builder’s Handbook : Become a Master Builder will not provide you instructions for a massive creation. It will give you a background in sophisticated techniques that will help you achieve your goals!
Through 200 pages, Author Deepak Senoy (@deepshen6), takes us through

2/8 In the first part, we are guided to learn the basics of the LEGO system. We learn the concepts of scaling your model. Techniques are taught that would allow us to build a simple, sturdy house.

3/8 -4/8 Having covered the basics, the second part of the book focuses on ‘going off the grid.’ We are taken through creating partial stud offsets, and applying SNOT (Studs not on top) techniques.

5/8 Shenoy is not afraid to reintroduce us to a bit of geometry. He explains how to use Pythagorean Triples to take the buildings off the rigid square afforded by the standard base plate. We are taken through how to use turntables and plates with vertical hinges to set walls on non-right angles, before looking at other techniques for going off-grid!

6/8 We look at the creation of round shapes, initially simple curves using SNOT bricks and curved slopes, employing brick bending techniques, and approximating these curves using polygonal forms with multiple hinges.

7/8 The final section of the book looks at computer-assisted model design for both mosaic and sculptural models.

8/8No Starch Press have made 10 copies of the ebook available for readers of the rambling brick. Names will be drawn at random at 10pm (AEST) on November 30 2024. Simply tag a friend and follow the ramblingbrick on Instagram. For an extra chance, comment on the complete book review on the blog at ramblingbrick.com. This giveaway is not endorsed by Instagram.

Thanks to No Starch Press for sending a copy of the book over to review.

Thanks to #nostarchpress for sending me a copy of @deepshen6 ‘s LEGO Builder’s Handbook to look at in real life. I had the chance to read through it earlier in the year, but holding the book in your hands is always a better experience.
I’ll write up my review soon, but in the meantime, here’s my quote from the notary website:
“This book is aimed at people ready to start planning their own LEGO®️ builds. The author is well-known in the community for his large LEGO towers, in both physical and digital forms. He imparts the lessons he has learned in developing these models, from basic brick stacking through SNOT (Studs Not On Top) and offset techniques, through to more advanced methods to help you take your builds off-the-grid, regardless of the scale you wish to work at. I reckon even experienced builders will have something to learn from this book.“

I’ll have more to say soon.

Congratulations to @deepshen6 on his upcoming book, The LEGO Builder's Handbook: Become a Master Builder.

I played a very small role in this title, doing the 'technical review', and I can't wait for everyone else to see what a great book Deepak has authored. His skyscraper models are incredible and the techniques in this book make them seem approachable and achievable instead of incredibly daunting!

It will be published in November – in time for Christmas! – but it's already available to pre-order at all good book retailers.

"Entranced" is my updated version of the Starry Night World Map. After posting my original version, it really felt incomplete and like l needed to do something with the continents to be true to me and my style. I'm really glad I took the time to revisit it. The pinks and reds really add so much to this and make the continents feel much more part of the whole piece. In retrospect, the fact that I didn't name my original but wanted to give this one a title is pretty telling 😁
.
I'm pumped to get another contribution to #mosaicsonmonday!
.
This would not have been possible without @deepshen6 being so kind with his time and helping me figure out the right Starry Night mapping using the awesome software he's been building.
