A little front porch talk about where I’ve been—and the stories still ahead. 🤠

Twenty-five years photographing people. More than a decade publishing magazines and telling stories. Two years owning and publishing @ropersmagazine Ropers Sports News. And now, novels—with no shortage of characters or coffee.

My first novel, Seminole Son, is inspired by my ancestor’s journey from being captured at age four to escaping at 18 and eventually homesteading in Hunt, Texas. Family history has a way of outdoing fiction.

My newest chapter is @crowsnestcowgirls Crows Nest Cowgirls—a Western book series for horse-loving girls ages 8–12, full of rodeo adventures, friendship, confidence, and Western values. Four books are available, and book five is in the works!

Moms and grandmas: got a young cowgirl who needs a good book? Come meet the girls. ❤️

🤠 Follow Crows Nest Cowgirls on Instagram AND TikTok for story peeks, cowgirl adventures, and updates on what’s coming next.

📚 Shop the series: CrowsNestCowgirls.com

Share this with a mom or grandma raising the next generation of cowgirls.

What a treat to have @Joey Niebrugge from the @National Rodeo Hall of Fame make the trip all the way out to California to celebrate the @beachbreakawave with us! 🌊🤠

The Breakawave was honored with a Wrangler Award, and having Joey here to help celebrate made it even more special.

Joey is an absolute gem and such a champion for preserving and promoting our Western heritage through the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. And if that isn’t enough, she’s also helping bring an incredible lineup of events to the Lazy E Arena in Oklahoma.

People like Joey keep the stories, traditions and future of the cowboy way of life moving forward — and we’re mighty lucky to have her here on the California coast with us.

Welcome to California, Joey. We sure are glad you came! ❤️🤠🌊

Saturday pregame at the @beachbreakawave 🌊🤠

The ocean is still, the arena is set, and Avila Beach is showing off this morning. We’re hanging out with the @calpolyrodeo crew before the action gets rolling—and I’m pretty sure there aren’t many rodeo arenas with a view like this.

Beach. Breakaway. Good people. Let’s get Saturday started.

🐾 REBA × TRIP PUPPY UPDATE
Calaveras Labradors
These little black beauties are getting BIG! ❤️

Our Reba × Trip litter was born September 4, 2026, and we’ve hit one of my favorite stages—their little eyes are starting to open, they’re moving around more every day, and suddenly there’s a whole lot more action in the puppy box.

We currently have 3 reservation spots still available.

If you’re looking for a finely bred black Labrador with proven working genetics, excellent noses, retrieving drive, trainability, and the temperament to be both a hunting partner and family dog, this is a special cross.

Trip is a Master Hunter and Master National qualifier, backed by generations of accomplished field Labradors, and Reba brings the wonderful temperament, nose, intelligence and biddability we value so much in our program.

When you win two saddles but nobody said anything about how you were supposed to get them to the truck. 😂🤠

Rowdy wrapped up one heck of a weekend — and one heck of a year — as the NCJRA Year-End All-Around Champion, plus the Year-End Chute Dogging Champion and All-Around Champion this weekend. 🏆

So naturally… he loaded up the Segway and headed for the truck. 😂

More on this cowboy’s year later.

The things that make me the happiest are grown right here. Everyday is a new surprise. A new color. A new flavor. A new adventure under the California sun. It’s home. by @deeyates_

There was never a quiet moment in the whip. Just music, all the way from Berkeley to home, and Rowdy singing Stevie Ray Vaughan the whole ride.

He was nine years old when this started. Just a boy with a big feel for music and no idea where it would take him. He is still at it, still studying, still sitting down with a new vocal teacher and working on technique, crafting a voice that matches the music in him.

Music has been an ever evolving path for him. It bends and doubles back and opens up into something new every year. It feeds his heart. It feeds his soul.

Stevie Ray is one of his role models, and you can hear it when he sings. All feel, nothing faked.

Music is how the two of us talk to each other. It has been ours since the beginning, and it is the thing that keeps both our hearts strong.

I love him. And I will take that drive home a hundred more times just to hear him sing. by @deeyates_
