Announcement:
The word legend gets used too often and too easily.
But I had the honour of chopping it up with a true legend of the culture— @unique_aka_sereck
A member of one of the most influential groups in Australian music regradless of genre (@defwishcast ) we broke down his verse on their epic, Perennial Cross Swords.
We talked narrative writing, graffiti as a lifelong companion, and how truth and fiction blur when you’re painting scenes from memory. But it went deeper—into style, discipline, the instinct to visualise before writing, and what it means to stay sharp across decades without losing your edge or your hunger.
As @bigfoot750hg put it:
“Paul (Sereck) is one of the most active OG’s still putting it down across all disciplines.”
He’s not wrong.
From rhyme to wall to stage to sketchpad—Sereck isn’t just involved. He’s embedded.
Still pushing. Still evolving. Still a true Legend.
Excerpt:
Sereck’s writing on Perennial is pure street journalism. His verse doesn’t just tell you what happened—he drops you right there. However given the chance for artistic interpretation, I’ve always wondered how much of this particular story was drawn from real events—and how much was poetic license.
“Perennial is a story based on truth,” Sereck smiles as we start our chat. “It actually contains two nights as I have so many experiences of crazy adventures. One happened in Campbelltown and the other in Lavender Bay train yards in Sydney. One is way out southwest, the other right next to Luna Park in North Sydney. I combined both stories and added a touch of fiction so you can visually picture the action.”
Truth. Visual. I can’t say I’m surprised. Not when his verse reads like a page from a graffiti writer’s black book with lines like: ‘The tracks rest my entire colours that I stole / The first outline in yellow, my mind so mellow / A counter glow of a writer battling solo’
It’s a link back to his love of anime and graphic novels. Vivid, animated, exploding with colour and movement, built with the kind of technical craft the average punter might not catch on a first listen. Not because it’s subtle, but because you’re too busy running through the yard with him. 🔜 by @defwishcast

‘There's a second of doubt almost of, “Oh, I haven't done this for a while” — a bit of self-confidence and self-belief, you know. And it's funny, as soon as we perform, literally, it all just goes boom. Muscle memory. 40 years of being together and doing this. It's automatic, isn't it.’ – Die C of @defwishcast

@treythelma interviews Defwish, Die C and Sereck for the Western Sydney Hip Hop Archive.
