FEBRUARY 1993 — PHUNKY PHRESH

DJ Nigel already had a Friday night residency at the Astor Hotel — a night called Rubber. In February '93, right after the Hip Hop Sound Lounge at Le Rox closed, he rebranded it as a Hip Hop night, to give Adelaide's growing Hip Hop community a new home.

The format included a happy hour and a record launch most weeks, coordinated with the labels putting up giveaways — Arrested Development, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy & more.

Nigel @djagent86 offered Quro the weekly hosting role.

The Core reviewed the first night: "A strong start... Quromystix, Madcap, Flak, Muskrat and Planet all added da freestylin' mic flava."

And that's how it ran all year. The freestyle sessions that started at the Sound Lounge continued, and whoever turned up got a turn. Clubbers, hip hop heads and some of the graf community would show up. By mid-year a young Sia Furler, just out of high school, had started coming along with friends.

One Friday in April the night was closed to the public — Madcap's 21st and Planet's 18th, with live sets from Mama's Funk, Def Wish Cast, Intense Quality and Homebrew. The room was packed.

Southern Fried came out that month and FLG went on DJ Ezee-G's radio show. Ezee-G had mentioned that a teenage kid would often ring into his show whenever he played hip hop. Off-air, he asked if he could pass Madcap's number on. He rang the next afternoon. He was 15, and they talked for hours. He knew more about Hip Hop than Madcap had expected, breaks included.

Phunky Phresh was over-18s, but pubs allowed under-18s with a guardian. The following Friday he turned up with his brother as his guardian and his brother's mates. After a bit of a chat, he was handed the microphone. He jumped up on the stage and unleashed a verse, almost shouting as much as rapping, but from the back of the room you could see a passion in this guy that was a sight to behold.

His name was @deltathelostralian

It’s Our Thing: More History on Australian Hip-Hop (Part I) Exhibition Catalogue

"Throughout June and July 2016, Blacktown Arts Centre presented It’s Our Thing: More History on Australian Hip-Hop (Part I).

Curated by Kon Gouriotis and Paul Howard, this first iteration of the exhibition series was inspired by chance encounters between some of Australia’s founding hip-hop crews and visual artists in Blacktown in the early 1990s.

The exhibition revisited the emergence of this dynamic sub-culture, examining how the collaborative practices and styles of hip-hop culture have influenced the work of contemporary artists Khaled Sabsabi and Minky Rawat. Sabsabi and Rawat presented new and archival artworks, alongside works by some of the most iconic artists of the 20th century – Joseph Beuys, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol."

It’s Our Thing: More History on Australian Hip-Hop (Part II)
22 June 2017 – 12 August 2017

"This second iteration presents the work of 14 contemporary performance and visual artists who continue to explore the explosion of hip-hop culture in Blacktown during the 1990s and its impact on current artistic practices."

🎶 TRACKLIST 13TH MAY 2026 🎶

The first slide we were in the sit down on air studio where we spun some Aus Hip Hop vinly from Peril’s collection - he has some real gems in there. This set included 3 of the first ever Aus Hip Hop tracks to be pressed on 12 inch.

Second slide is tracks from the last 20 mins of the show when we let Peril loose in the Kiss Fm Mix Lab. He played us ‘some funky shit’ a selection of music that influenced him. This set will be out on @kissfmaustralia Youtube channel soon.

We also go to hear Peril’s latest release ‘Claim 2 Fame’ the soundtrack to his latest documentary art book project with Paris. He also spun a never heard before track from 86 with Peril and Nemo a really cool piece of history. These two tracks are available together on his latest vinyl drop.

If you haven’t heard songs by some of the first Aus artists we played, I highly recommend you check them out and replay the show on Mixcloud. Start doing some research into the sound and influences that shaped Aus Hip Hop it’s pretty interesting stuff to see how many different sounds there were!
