Engineering a better built environment for our clients and communities.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
From our roots in San Francisco to communities around the world, earthquake resilience remains at the heart of what we do.

This year's Great ShakeOut comes just days before the 37th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a defining moment for the Bay Area, where our firm is headquartered.

More recently, our engineers traveled to Venezuela following the June 2026 earthquakes to document damage, learn from the impacts on buildings and communities, and bring those lessons back to our work.

Decades apart and thousands of miles away, these events reinforce the same lesson: preparedness matters, wherever we are.

Today, we join the Great ShakeOut in encouraging everyone to take a moment to practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. local time.

Because every lesson learned and every step taken toward preparedness helps build a more resilient future.

Lean is only as effective as the connections behind it.

Join our very own John Raad and Vincent Mortillaro at the 2026 Lean Construction Institute (LCI) Congress in Atlanta for Lean Isn't Lean If It's Disconnected.

📅 Thursday, October 15 | 1:15–2:00 PM
📍 LCI Congress | Atlanta, GA

Alongside Alonso De Avila Jr. of General Motors and Glenn Peer Jr of Barton Malow, they'll explore how disconnected workflows and expectations can limit the impact of Lean practices—and how better alignment among owners, designers, contractors, and trade partners can improve coordination, accelerate schedules, and strengthen project delivery.

Attending Congress? We hope to see you there!

We’re proud to celebrate our own Kenda Salisbury who has been named an At-Large Director of the 2027 Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) Board of Directors! 🎉

As a Degenkolb Business Development Director and a longtime leader within SMPS, Kenda’s impact reaches far beyond our firm. Her commitment to sharing knowledge, building relationships, and strengthening the AEC community reflects something we believe deeply at Degenkolb: every connection matters.

“I joined SMPS because I wanted to learn how to do my job, and somewhere along the way it taught me how to lead. I'm excited for the opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much.”

Kenda will serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2027. We’re excited to see her bring the same thoughtful leadership she shares with Degenkolb to SMPS at the national level.

Congratulations, Kenda!

Congratulations to Degenkolb Senior Principal and Director of Technical Advancement Robert (Bob) Pekelnicky, recipient of the James M. Delahay Memorial Award from NCSEA! 🏆

The prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of building codes and standards—and few have demonstrated that commitment more consistently than Bob.

Over his 24-year career at Degenkolb, Bob has become a leading voice in seismic evaluation, retrofit, and performance-based design, dedicating much of his work to advancing the codes and standards that shape structural engineering practice. His contributions span ASCE/SEI 41, ASCE 7, the NEHRP Provisions, AISC standards, NIST’s Community Resilience Planning Guide, and more.

Degenkolb Senior Principal and past Delahay Award recipient Jim Malley shared: "It was such a pleasure to learn that Bob Pekelnicky was awarded the NCSEA Delahay award for all his contributions to the development of structural standards. Bob’s commitment to the advancement of ASCE 7 and 41, AISC 342, and the NEHRP Provisions is truly remarkable. And, I have no doubt that this will continue for years to come. Congrats Bob, on this well-deserved recognition!”

We’re proud to celebrate Bob and the lasting impact his leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to advancing the profession continue to have on building safety and performance.

Congratulations, Bob! 🎉 #Degenkolb #StructuralEngineering #NCSEA #SeismicEngineering #BuildingCodes #EngineeringLeadership by @degenkolbengineers

Summer looks good on Degenkolb. ☀️
Across our offices, Degenkolbers came together for our annual summer picnics—taking time away from the day-to-day to enjoy good food, good company, and a little fun outside the office.
These gatherings are a reminder that strong relationships don’t just support great work—they’re part of what makes Degenkolb, Degenkolb.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s picnics happen, and to all who joined us in celebrating another summer together!

A dino-mite season for the Degenkolb Dinos! 🦖⚾
Our Bay Area softball team brought together players from our San Francisco and Oakland offices for a summer of friendly competition against peers from across our industry. The Dinos put up a fight all season long and battled their way into the playoffs—with fellow employees showing up to cheer them on from the sidelines.
Thanks to everyone who played, cheered, and made this season one to remember. We’re already looking forward to getting the Dinos back on the field next year!

Engineers are used to seeing more than what’s there today. We see what a structure, a space, or an idea can become.
Our San Francisco team recently had the chance to tour our new office, currently under construction. It’s still very much a work in progress, but walking the space gave us a first glimpse of the place where we’ll soon collaborate, build stronger relationships, and keep putting projects first together.
There’s plenty of construction still ahead, but the vision is coming into focus. We can’t wait to move in later this year.
Thank you Skyline Construction, RMW architecture & interiors and Summit Construction Management for helping bring the vision for our new SF office to life. We’re excited to see it take shape! by @degenkolbengineers

This summer, 22 interns joined Degenkolb Engineers and Ruby+Associates, a Degenkolb Company, bringing their curiosity, perspectives, and growing engineering expertise to offices across the firm.

Over the course of the summer, they worked alongside our teams on everything from seismic evaluation and structural design to construction engineering, drafting, analysis, and tool development—putting what they’ve learned in the classroom into practice on real projects.

Now, we’re turning the spotlight over to them.

Meet our 2026 summer interns and hear, in their own words, what brought them to Degenkolb and Ruby, what they worked on, and what they’re taking away from the experience.
