We wrapped up our first two classes with New Traditions Elementary School! 🏖️ The kids brainstormed ideas for our sandcastle design, and then learned how to build their ideas using kinetic sand. We're so excited for the next class, where the kids will learn how to draw to scale in preparation for build day! We'd love your support in raising money for youth arts programs in San Francisco. Every donation helps bring arts education to students across the city and power the Leap Sandcastle Classic. Help us keep the creativity going. The building doesn’t match the drawings… now what? Existing buildings have a habit of exposing every assumption you made from the original record drawings. In Episode 125, The Building Doesn’t Match the Drawings, Dan Sloat of @degenkolbengineers joins us to talk about the challenges of evaluating and modifying existing structures from uncovering hidden conditions to designing connections that actually work with what’s in the field. Because sometimes the most important structural detail is the one nobody drew.

"Following an extensive two-year renovation led by Signum Architecture and BAMO, Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) has just unveiled a stunning new hospitality center that blends modern design with original structural elements, bringing new life to the winery’s historic stone buildings in Rutherford. The structures, dating to the 1880s, were thoughtfully restored, while new floor-to-ceiling glass, reclaimed redwood from former winery tanks, and salvaged Douglas Fir were incorporated into design. Historical artifacts and custom artwork by local Bay Area artists are also incorporated throughout the winery." — Lotus Abrams, SPACES Many thanks to Lotus Abrams and the team at SPACES magazine! As the country’s first all-electric healthcare campus, @ucihealth - Irvine sets a new design standard for the typology. The design-build team of @henselphelps and @coarchitects drew on @ucihealth’s mission—“Discover, Teach, Heal”—to guide the design of the new two-building UCI Health-Irvine (UCIH-I) facility for the University of California, Irvine. The project team created collaborative care environments that connect patient, student, and staff areas to campus open spaces. The building’s siting takes advantage of views toward the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve wildlife sanctuary, strengthening the connection to the surrounding natural landscape. Each patient room has a marsh view, leveraging the documented benefits of biophilic healing. This confidential client's maritime history is built into the workplace through details that reference its vessels, cargo, and legacy. A boat-inspired ceiling structure defines the boardroom, corrugated steel recalls shipping containers, and a glass display nook showcases a vessel model. Original artwork, historical imagery, and a custom timeline carry the company’s story throughout the space. We're proud to have partnered with incredible teams to bring this vision to life: @bccibuilders @howellconstruction @degenkolbengineers @cresaglobal @matrixhg @commercialcaseworks @oneworkplace @jp_digital_imaging @apidesign_ Read more about the project at the link in bio! 📸 @johnsuttonphotography

This World Nature Conservation Day, we're recognizing a project that preserves and protects our natural resources and ecosystems. Designed by @henselphelps + @coarchitects, the @ucihealth - Irvine multi-building healthcare campus is one of the first major hospitals around the world that runs entirely on electricity. The campus is heated and cooled by the project’s all-electric central utility plant and incorporate multiple energy-efficient strategies, including sunshades that reduce solar gain by up to 85 percent. High-efficiency glazing features a custom ceramic frit pattern that doubles as a bird-friendly surface, designed in consideration of the adjoining wetland’s avian populations. To further ensure that the project did not negatively impact the marsh, @coarchitects worked with UCI biologists to position the buildings for minimal environmental impact, install a turtle fence to protect endangered reptiles, treat site runoff, and enhance the local ecosystem with filtered condensate water.
