🎬 Come join Science for the People and DegrowNYC for a free screening of "Earth's Greatest Enemy", a documentary produced by The Empire Files' Abby Martin. This two-hour film investigates the hidden and unreported environmental costs of the world's largest institutional polluter, the US military, and draws the link between US empire and accelerating climate destruction.

After the film, there will be an interactive discussion where we will collectively explore the information presented in the film and the urgent need for anti-imperialist, anti-militarist struggle in the face of climate catastrophe.

See you there!

“Maybe somebody looking at this will be able to learn that we’re no different from them, that our problems are their problems, and that any one of those people could be in my position right now”

Join us on August 29 at Fort Greene Park for a screening of We’re Alive, a 1974 documentary that details the conditions and experiences of women incarcerated at the California Institute for Women, which at the time was one of the largest correctional facilities in the country. Although made over 50 years ago, the experiences and perspectives of these women are remarkably similar to our own as they navigate unemployment, homophobia, inadequate healthcare, and the criminalization of poverty.

As we resist the construction of new jails in our city, this documentary will help ground our understanding of the ways that incarceration serves the interest of the state and damages our communities. We look forward to seeing you there! by @degrownyc

Boycott Rockaway Ocean Club & all of the businesses in the Riis Bathhouse!

"Rockaway Ocean Club" is a flimsy privatization scheme by Aulder Capital, CBSK Development, Brooklyn Bazaar, and Investo Capital (among others) to turn public space into a private club. Riis was built for all of us & has been kept alive by working class & immigrant & Black & queer & trans beachgoers despite decades of abandonment. Privatization is theft! Riis needs care, not gentrification!

Pledge to boycott the private club (aka Rockaway Ocean Club) taking over the Riis Bathhouse. This means:

1. DON'T BUY ANYTHING AT THE BEACH CLUB, BARS, RESTAURANTS, HOTEL, AND POOL: Don't buy anything there, don't drink at their bars, don't swim in their pool. They've sunk an astonishing $88 million into this thing and don't have a clear path to profitability. Let's make sure it fails!

2. DON'T PERFORM AT OR ATTEND ANY OF THEIR EVENTS: They're trying to gentrify us out of our own beach, so don't give them the delight of queer culture and performance! They don't deserve us!

3. CHOOSE SOLIDARITY: Riis is Riis because we love and care for each other. Bring snacks to share, support the other businesses on the boardwalk that love us, and keep coming back to the beach!

Rockaway Ocean Club has threatened to open in summer 2024, July 2025, and August 2025, long before this 2026's botched July 4th announcement & it’s end-of-July 2026 postponement.

Let’s make sure their grimy business plan stays unprofitable!

It’s still THE PEOPLE’S BEACH! RIIS BEACH IS FREE!!

xoxo,

☀️ As summer heats up, we think about undemocratic, unsustainable development in our city, and how it impacts people and our environments.

Riis Beach has long been a place for working class queer community to gather, but it’s under threat of encroaching development by notorious landlords and their private beach club plans. Beach gentrification is an extension of settler colonialism: the ruling class exerting its will over land and people. Mismanagement of the coastal infrastructure has contributed to an eroding coast - meaning less space for us to gather! This gentrification has also meant more policing, which we can expect to only expand with this development.

To defend the People’s Beach, tap in to @pplsriisearch, who have compiled research on how this development impacts the land and our communities. See the link in their linktree for ways to get updates or reach out directly at riisearch.group@gmail.com, or riisearch.group@proton.me.

Mayor Mamdani’s campaign and election gave many New Yorkers hope and showed us what’s possible when we gather in numbers. What if we mobilized for our houseless neighbors, resisted carceral construction projects, and invested in community solutions with the same fervor?
We share these quotes as examples of the hypocrisy and limitations of this mayoral administration, and to encourage people to keep organizing: not just for elected figureheads, but for real change in our own communities. An NYC pursuing degrowth rejects all forms of z!onısm and carcerality, devoting public spending to benefit the people of NYC instead. 💙

🗓️February 21st marks the 178th birthday of The Communist Manifesto. We acknowledge this day to recognize the importance of highlighting the contradictions of Capitalism. We celebrate this text and its continued relevance, appliance and guidance for how movements can and should honor the every day people, the Proletarians. Here in New York City we are surrounded by the insidious systems of policing occurring on Unceded Lenape Land, from Rikers to ICE to the attempts to build new prisons. We see how every agent and officer is a manifestation of weapons wielded against the Proletariat, created by the Bourgeoisie to keep their cycles of control going. When we step back and see how every day people become pawns to a system of that pushes death, we are reminded that there is also the power to bring life. A life outside of and beyond the death cult that is Capitalism. Other futures are possible. We hope on this anniversary that you are reminded of the power of the Proletariat. A power that can be used to bring death to the Empire, disrupting the abusive cycles of Capitalism. The power of the Proletariat to choose and bring life when all we are given in Capitalism is death. May we all return to this text as one of the foundational blueprints for combatting the contradictions of Capitalism, accompanied by the vigor of the Fire Horse this Lunar New Year and other foundational figures that offer guidance during this Black History Month. by @degrownyc

In September 2020, AIA New York’s Board of Directors issued a statement calling on architects to no longer “design unjust, cruel or harmful spaces of incarceration within the current United States justice system, such as prisons, jails, detention centers, and police stations.”

It also announced that AIANY would “refrain from honoring work that it considers antithetical to the AIA Code of Ethics, which states that the works of architects should ‘enhance and facilitate human dignity and the health, safety, and welfare of the individual and the public.’”

On January 27th, having long abandoned its BLM-era pledges, AIANY is hosting a presentation at @centerforarch about the in-process Brooklyn jail’s “design and delivery approach,” featuring senior leadership of the firms and agencies responsible for its construction: @nycddc, @hoknetwork, and @aecom.

Join us for a picket of the event, with a focus on flyering guests as they enter and leave the 9:30–11:30am event. Let us make it loud and clear that New Yorkers reject the expropriation of public resources for the caging and immiseration of our neighbors!

Time: Tuesday, January 27, 9am–12pm

In 1874, the largest crowd of protestors in NYC history gathered in Tompkins Square Park to demand public works and economic relief during a severe depression. The state responded with police violence instead of support.

Today, 15,000 New York nurses are on strike demanding safe staffing levels, fair working conditions, and fair wages.

Across centuries, the story is the same: when workers organize to meet basic needs, they are met with resistance from systems built to protect capital. Today’s struggles aren’t isolated events, and are part of a longer fight for dignity and collective care PAGE 1 — Cover Page
Visual Description:
The page is divided into two main sections. The top half has a muted light green background with a faint, semi-transparent historical map texture. Centered at the top is a small illustrated logo featuring a cartoon snail with mushrooms growing from its shell; beneath the illustration is the word “degrownyc.” Below the logo, large bold dark navy text spans multiple lines.
The bottom half of the page features a detailed black-and-white historical illustration showing a dense crowd of working-class people in 19th-century clothing. Men and women appear panicked and in motion, with tense facial expressions. Some figures are pushing forward while others stumble or crouch. In the background, uniformed police officers wield clubs above the crowd, suggesting violence and force. Bare trees and a park fence are faintly visible, indicating an outdoor urban setting.

🤖✨As workers within the imperial core, how do we understand the current push for AI, particularly generative AI and LLMs? Looking at its impacts, we can see that it disproportionately threatends the work, health, and environment of Black and working class people. Its training and accompanying technology enables violent forms of extraction in the Global South, including in the Congo. Looking at its uses, it compromises our security and is used to surveil people undergoing active gen0cide.

Rather than depend on AI, we can build the skills to do our own archiving and truth-telling. Rather than feed our data to corporations, we can protect our communities by using alternatives. Most importantly, we can organize to defend our communities from harmful development, and to overthrow capitalism in favor of sustainable forms of development instead.” The background is a purple gradient with faded intersecting lines and circles portraying a circuit. At the bottom is the DegrowNYC snail logo. Above is the star icon commonly used in web design to represent AI. 📚UNDERSTANDING MONOPOLY FINANCE💰
With Black Friday and Cyber Monday behind us and Christmas season ahead, it’s worth remembering that capitalists use these holidays to absorb overproduction. When monopolies produce more than people can buy, the system turns to finance and speculation to stay afloat. The instability and inequality we feel today are features of monopoly finance capitalism.

Follow along as we share more of our internal political education on capitalism, how it fails us, and the socialist path forward. A full-page graphic with a solid light peach background. Large bold text is centered. Decorative graphic elements include simple line accents but no illustrations.
