After graduating high school in 2017, I thought I knew what I wanted to do. After my 2nd year of college, I changed my major 3 times, y’all… THREE.

Finally, after binging many seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, I was convinced that I wanted to be a nurse (all the wrong reasons, I know) but I for real thought this was what I was meant to be!! So I pushed through the pre-reqs, but it wasn’t without my mental health taking a decline. I was struggling, but I figured it was supposed to be that hard, so I kept going.

I finished my prerequisites but was so unhappy. Mentally and physically I was exhausted. All the while, I was working in education and had been doing so since I was 18 years old. I loved my job, but for some reason I saw it as just that…a job. It wasn’t until I finished my pre-reqs and re-evaluated my chosen path that I realized nursing just isn’t for me, and like a lightbulb going off in my head, I realized I should’ve been a teacher all along.

For whatever reason, teaching never came to mind. Even though I used to force my brothers to play “school” when we were younger, (assigned them homework and gave them fake report cards…I was serious yall) and I was enjoying my day-to-day job working as an instructional aide, I never thought of turning it into my career until then.

So I pivoted. In October of 2022, I changed my major for the last time to Elementary Education. In April of this year, I officially earned my Bachelor’s Degree. This unconventional path took me 7 years from the time I graduated high school till now, but with little signs here and there from God, I’ve never felt more strongly about finally being where I’m meant to be! Cheers to that! 🥂 by @deja.dames
