Junior year of high school, I found @strikemagazinechatt on social media and couldn’t look away. There was something about it; the creativity, the energy, the boldness that felt so different from anything I was used to. I grew up in a place where everything felt cookie-cutter, and at the time, I was doing everything I could to blend in. I kept my head down, stayed quiet, and pushed aside parts of myself that didn’t feel “normal,” especially my creativity.

I didn’t realize it then, but I was craving a space like Strike. Something that made individuality feel powerful instead of something to hide.

Now I’m writing this as my fifth issue on staff and my first as Editor-in-Chief. It still doesn’t feel real to say. In a lot of ways, this moment feels like it’s for my younger self, one who thought she had to make herself smaller to be accepted. Being in this position has shown me that the things I once held back are actually the things that matter most.

What I care about most in this role is making sure Strike continues to be that space for other people. A place where you can create freely, take risks, and feel proud of what you have to say. A place where you don’t have to filter yourself to fit in.

When I look at the team I get to lead, I get emotional. This group of people is so talented, but more than that, they care. Everyone shows up, puts their whole heart into this, and trusts each other in the process. That kind of connection is rare, and it’s what makes this magazine what it is.

This year has changed me in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve grown so much creatively, intellectually, and personally and I know that’s because of the people on this team. Every single person plays a role in bringing this to life, and I couldn’t have done this without them.

Issue 11 means a lot to all of us. We gave it everything we had, and it reflects not just our creativity, but our trust in each other and in this process. I wouldn’t change a single thing.
We hope you feel something when you read Vessel.
