BETAPLEIN | HEERLEN

To complete Heerlen’s city centre, Betaplein transforms a disconnected urban square into a green social landscape, strengthening the relationship between ecology, public life and the cultural identity of the city.

As a creative and inclusive place for students, entrepreneurs, artists and the wider community, Betaplein brings together different people, activities and experiences. The square also borders a local care and wellbeing centre, adding a meaningful social dimension and reinforcing Betaplein as a place for connection, support and everyday encounter.

Greenery, comfort and moments of pause create a new rhythm within the city. Through climate-adaptive interventions, increased biodiversity and an integrated public realm, Betaplein becomes a resilient, welcoming and accessible everyday landscape for Heerlen, a place for creativity, encounter, care and connection.

SCHELMENHOFJE | HEERLEN

Schelmenhofje transforms a long-neglected passage space into an intimate, climate-adaptive urban landscape where heritage, culture and everyday life come together.

Located beside the former medieval Landsfort Herle, the courtyard reconnects with Heerlen’s historic origins. The Schelmentoren becomes the spatial anchor once again, surrounded by greenery and shaded places to meet, pause and stay.

As part of a broader urban strategy, Schelmenhofje contributes to a network of green routes and public spaces that reconnect Heerlen’s city centre with its past, present and future.

DE PIER | SCHEVENINGEN

De Pier and Pierplein transform into one continuous public coastal landscape, reconnecting Scheveningen with the sea. From the boulevard, the landscape flows across the square and onto the 250-metre-long roof of De Pier.

Soft topography, coastal planting and flowing routes bring the character of dunes, wind and water into the public space and both physically and visibly experiencable. Moving further above the sea, the landscape gradually opens up, placing the coast, the elements and the horizon at the centre of the experience.

ETTA PALMPLEIN | GRONINGEN

DELVA has been selected to design Etta Palmplein, the future heart of De Suikerzijde in Groningen.

Located at the heart of the new development, the square will bring together urban life and new nature. A green and flexible public space for everyday encounters, sports, play and relaxation, as well as markets, neighbourhood celebrations and larger events.

Built to grow alongside the neighbourhood, Etta Palmplein will become a lively meeting place from day one, and a new green landmark for Groningen.

Looking forward to develop the design the coming months!

BATAVA BOTERFABRIEK | NIJMEGEN

A hidden industrial site in Nijmegen’s Waterkwartier is opening up to the city. The former Batava Boterfabriek is transforming into a green residential landscape, where industrial heritage, nature and everyday urban life come together. By extending the Krayenhoffpark into the site, a continuous public landscape reconnects the former factory grounds with the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Existing trees form the foundation of the plan, while new homes are carefully positioned within the landscape. The historic factory remains the spatial and cultural anchor, connecting the site’s industrial past to a new way of living in the park.

Not a residential development with green spaces in between, but a park in which people live.

WISSELSPOOR | UTRECHT

Wisselspoor’s past is becoming visible again.
The former railway tracks are being restored, once again forming the backbone of the site, just as they did in the past.

They reconnect the area’s industrial heritage with a new landscape for living, working and meeting.

With the first phase around the @dehondekop completed, the transformation is taking shape. The next phase near the @pingpongclub_utrecht is now under construction.

SPATIAL ECONOMIC COMPASS | HEERLEN

Heerlen chooses growth.
With the adoption of the Spatial Economic Compass, the city commits to a coherent urban strategy. Heerlen is working towards a vibrant and attractive centre, with the landscape as the foundation of its development into a green, healthy city centre: a place for residents, workers and visitors alike. A fertile ground for a vital urban economy and attractive, inviting and lively environment.

Together with @site_urbandevelopment and in close collaboration with the municipality of Heerlen and local stakeholders, DELVA developed the SEC as a strategic framework for the future of Heerlen’s city centre.
Rather than a fixed masterplan, the SEC introduces the idea of an ‘ex-centric centre’: a connected urban ecosystem where the qualities of the inner city, railway zone and surrounding landscapes complement and reinforce one another.

Building on Heerlen’s raw character, layered history and pioneering spirit, the strategy creates space for new energy, new programmes and new forms of urban life.
A centre not only for shopping and amenities, but for living, working, learning and meeting.

TEAM WEEKEND | EINDHOVEN

We stepped away from the desk and into the field together in Eindhoven. Because everything begins with the base. Soil first.

With the planting season approaching, it becomes clear once again: real quality grows from the ground up. Healthy soil, strong roots, lasting results.

Good to be outside, hands in the earth, reconnecting as a team with what truly matters.
