To Demelza, home is love – a feeling she tries to cultivate everywhere, in the smallest of things.

when
birds chirp
a pencil meets paper
the sun warms the skin
sharing food
laughter
the mind falls silent

Demelza Okwan is a Ghanaian-British photographer, writer and artist from London, UK. Her work explores in-between moments and experiences of belonging.

Growing up feeling separate from the city, Demelza turned to analogue photography to reconnect with her surroundings. Through the camera, she reflects on the beauty of everyday life - creating space for stillness, quiet hope, and connection within the noise of her environment.

Through her project The Sun in My Grandparents’ Kitchen and her work with family archives, Demelza explores memory and the preservation of stories. By documenting the home she grew up in, she seeks to honour everyday lives and celebrate the experiences of diasporic working-class communities.
