#TBT to my steno story post from February of 2021 where I created @stenofluencer 💕💕💫💫

My Steno Story...

I will try to make this short! My boyfriend at the time (now Fiancé) who was a videographer introduced me to court reporting along with his cousin who was a court reporter.

I transferred from Montclair State University studying Linguistics & Speech Pathology to Court Reporting School because I knew it would take me half the time to finish school, less student loan debt and I would be making the same amount of money or more right out of school.. I also fell in love with the machine at orientation.. I mean who didn't immediately fall in love with the machine?!

I got pregnant during theory! Got up to 100wpm and took maternity leave a few weeks before being induced. I had my steno baby and took 6 months off of school.

My mom helped me with the baby so I can go back. I worked my butt off while working different jobs such as bartending and working overnight at Walmart from 10:30pm to 7am and then went straight to school. Got out of school and went straight to get the baby.

It was not easy!!! It took me 3 years to finish including the maternity leave but it was 1000% worth it.

I started out doing CART for Rutgers for about 4 years. Did captioning full time for VITAC for a year and then became an Official because I wanted more stability for my family.

Between becoming a full-time captioner and then an Official, we were able to close on our first home.

But let me tell you.. this career is so rewarding. Between keeping the record for important life-changing trials to providing closed captions to the hard-of-hearing and deaf community to ensure equal access, I feel fulfilled and I feel that I am living a life of purpose & service. I truly love what I do.

If you are in school, keep going because I promise you it will be worth it. And if you're thinking about making a career switch, DO it. Us court reporters, captioners & CART providers live beautiful lives. 💫🙌🏽

Test-taking on the weekends be like.. 😩🙄 While you're writing, take long deep breaths to calm your nerves & anxiety. Take as many as needed and watch how serene you begin to fill and gradually drift into that ZONE!!!

Graduation is one of those beautiful full-circle moments that reminds you just how far you've come. ❤️

My mentor introduced me to an incredible student in the beginning of her steno school journey and I had the privilege of walking alongside her, encouraging her through every speed bump, every test, every moment of doubt... and now, I get to celebrate her graduation. 🥹

One thing I've learned is that we can't wait until graduation to celebrate. Celebrate the failed test you came back from. Celebrate the new speed you reached. Celebrate showing up when you wanted to quit. Celebrate the small wins, because they are what make the big wins possible. Graduation isn't just one moment, it's the result of hundreds of moments where you chose not to give up.

Even more special? Her steno bestie crossed that stage right beside her.🤞🏽

Let this be your reminder: Find your steno bestie. Find your accountability partner. The person who celebrates your wins, picks you up after a failed test, reminds you why you started, and refuses to let you quit. Success is so much sweeter when you don't walk the journey alone.

I am incredibly honored and grateful to Plaza College's School of Court Reporting for awarding me the Legacy of the Profession Award at their 10th Annual Symposium and for trusting me to serve as this year's keynote speaker. This year's theme was "A Decade of Distinction."

This day became even more special & distinct because I had the opportunity to hold my very first book signing for "Melody's Magical Steno Machine." Watching children, students, and fellow stenographers embrace a book that was written to inspire the next generation of our profession was one of the most emotional moments of my life.

Thank you, Plaza College, for believing in my mission and allowing me to be part of such a meaningful day. My heart is so full, and I'm leaving inspired to continue serving, advocating for, and growing the future of stenography.
