As a recent dental school grad, here are even more things I wish I knew before starting D1

* Time management is key.
Get a planner (a digital calendar also works) and start using it. Write down your quizzes, exams, practicals, and assignments. Falling even a little behind in D1 is hard to recover from.

* Schedule real downtime.
Put fun activities, exercise, or hobbies on the calendar the same way you schedule exams. My mentor-turned-friend, Marsha says to do something each week that brings you joy!

* Prioritize sleep
Pulling all nighters wasn’t for me. 7+ hours was non-negotiable.

* Don’t compare yourself.
Soooo much easier said than done, ik! You’ll be a doctor before you know it. None of my patients have asked about my class rank (spoiler: I chose to not even find out).

As a recent dental school grad, here are more things I wish I knew before starting D1

* Be open to all areas of dentistry.
You may start thinking you’re passionate and set on one area of dentistry just to find that you like another!

* Get resources from upperclassmen.
My school has a big/little program, and most upperclassmen are willing to share resources and advice… just ask.

*Start budgeting NOW.
School is expensive, and small purchases add up. The less you borrow now, the less you’ll have to pay back later. Future you will thank you.

* Have fun in your city & with your classmates.
Dental school was my first time living in a city. Get dinner after class, explore your neighborhood, go to events, and make memories. Enjoy it!

As a recent dental school grad, these are what I wish I knew before starting D1

* You don’t need to be good at dentistry on day one.
My first prep, wax-up, impression, etc. humbled me! Hand skills are learned through repetition.

* Figure out how YOU learn.
What worked in undergrad may or may not work. Take time to find what works for you.

* Get to know your faculty.
Your professors are more than the people grading you. They’ll eventually be colleagues, mentors, and even friends.

* You are NOT behind.
Someone will always finish their prep faster, earn a better grade, or have an easier time learning a concept or skill. And you’ll still become a great dentist. Dental school is not a race. You got this! 💜🦷

Congress is voting on YOUR sleep!

There’s 2 competing bills currently in Congress.

Swipe to see how this affects you…

The 2 Competing Bills

Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139)
* Makes Daylight Saving Time permanent
* Passed in the House July 2026
* Currently in the Senate

Sunshine for our Kids Act (H.R. 9638)
* Makes Standard Time permanent
* Introduced July 2026
* Supported by health experts including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Pros & Cons

Permanent Daylight Savings Time (DST)
✅ Extra evening light
✅ More after-work daylight
❌ Dark winter mornings
❌ Worse body-clock alignment

Permanent Standard Time (ST)
✅ Brighter mornings
✅ Better circadian alignment
✅ Supported by sleep experts
❌ Earlier summer sunsets

What does this mean for your health?

Morning light is one of the strongest signals that rests your body clock (circadian rhythm)

DST

Circadian misalignment + Sleep deprivation

=

Increased risk of obesity, heart problems, & mood issues!

What you can do right now:

• Contact your U.S. Senators and ask them to oppose the Sunshine Protection Act.
• Contact your Representatives and ask them to support the Sunshine for Our Kids Act.
• Comment “STANDARD” if you support aligning our clocks with our circadian rhythm. You’ll receive a template letter straight to your inbox that you can send to your legislators. Tag your legislators!
• Share this post to help bring healthy sleep into the conversation! by @dentwithal

🎃🍬 Braces + Halloween candy: what should you avoid? 🦷

Halloween can still be fun with braces! But some candies can damage brackets, bend wires, or get stuck around orthodontic appliances.

As a pediatric dentist, here are the Halloween treats I’d recommend skipping if your child has braces:

🚫 Hard candy — can put excessive pressure on brackets
🚫 Sticky candy — caramel, taffy, and toffee can pull on brackets and wires
🚫 Chewy candy — can get stuck around orthodontic appliances
🚫 Gummy candy — especially difficult to clean around brackets
🚫 Candy with nuts — hard pieces can damage orthodontic appliances
🚫 Popcorn — kernels and hulls can get trapped around braces

💡 Better choices: chocolate that melts easily, peanut butter cups without whole nuts, or other soft treats that don’t require lots of chewing.

And remember: brushing and flossing are extra important with braces! Candy + plaque around brackets can increase the risk of cavities and white spots.

Halloween doesn’t have to be candy-free, just braces-friendly! 👻🦷

📌Save this guide before trick-or-treating and share it with a parent whose child has braces!

🪥 OCTOBER ORAL HYGIENE SERIES | DAY 14: BAD BREATH IN KIDS

👃💨 Does your child have bad breath? It’s common, and it doesn’t always mean something is wrong, but persistent bad breath, also called halitosis, is worth paying attention to.

Here are some common causes:

🦷 Poor oral hygiene — Plaque, food debris, and bacteria can build up on the teeth, gums, and tongue.

👅 Not brushing the tongue — Bacteria can accumulate on the tongue and contribute to an unpleasant odor.

💧 Dry mouth — Saliva helps naturally cleanse the mouth, so reduced saliva can contribute to bad breath.

🤒 Illness or congestion — Mouth breathing, a stuffy nose, or certain illnesses can temporarily affect breath.

🦷 Cavities or gum inflammation — Dental problems can sometimes cause persistent changes in breath.

🚩 When should you check in with your dentist?
If your child’s bad breath doesn’t improve with consistent brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning, and good hydration, or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms like gum bleeding, pain, swelling, or a noticeable dental problem, it’s a good idea to have it evaluated.

✨ Pediatric dentist tip: Don’t just reach for a breath mint or mouthwash to cover the smell. Find the cause! Healthy breath starts with a healthy mouth.

Save this post for the next time your little one’s breath has you wondering, “What’s going on?” 🦷💙

The exact personal statement frameworks we followed to get into dental school & ortho residency 👉

Programs can already see your grades, awards, and experiences. What they can’t see is how those experiences shaped your perspective and led you to dentistry and your specialty.

Whether you’re applying to dental school, residency, or another healthcare program, we hope this makes the writing process a little less overwhelming.

Foodie Friday Episode 3 | Come make one of my favorite post-clinic drinks! I used A2 milk from a local farm, Heart & Soil Colostrum (for immune function & muscle recovery), and chocolate protein powder (for extra flavor).

Sometimes, I’ll add the colostrum to my matcha, or just milk for a nutrient boost!

What should I make next week?
