🎃🍬 Braces + Halloween candy: what should you avoid? 🦷

Halloween can still be fun with braces! But some candies can damage brackets, bend wires, or get stuck around orthodontic appliances.

As a pediatric dentist, here are the Halloween treats I’d recommend skipping if your child has braces:

🚫 Hard candy — can put excessive pressure on brackets
🚫 Sticky candy — caramel, taffy, and toffee can pull on brackets and wires
🚫 Chewy candy — can get stuck around orthodontic appliances
🚫 Gummy candy — especially difficult to clean around brackets
🚫 Candy with nuts — hard pieces can damage orthodontic appliances
🚫 Popcorn — kernels and hulls can get trapped around braces

💡 Better choices: chocolate that melts easily, peanut butter cups without whole nuts, or other soft treats that don’t require lots of chewing.

And remember: brushing and flossing are extra important with braces! Candy + plaque around brackets can increase the risk of cavities and white spots.

Halloween doesn’t have to be candy-free, just braces-friendly! 👻🦷

🪥 OCTOBER ORAL HYGIENE SERIES | DAY 14: BAD BREATH IN KIDS

👃💨 Does your child have bad breath? It’s common, and it doesn’t always mean something is wrong, but persistent bad breath, also called halitosis, is worth paying attention to.

Here are some common causes:

🦷 Poor oral hygiene — Plaque, food debris, and bacteria can build up on the teeth, gums, and tongue.

👅 Not brushing the tongue — Bacteria can accumulate on the tongue and contribute to an unpleasant odor.

💧 Dry mouth — Saliva helps naturally cleanse the mouth, so reduced saliva can contribute to bad breath.

🤒 Illness or congestion — Mouth breathing, a stuffy nose, or certain illnesses can temporarily affect breath.

🦷 Cavities or gum inflammation — Dental problems can sometimes cause persistent changes in breath.

🚩 When should you check in with your dentist?
If your child’s bad breath doesn’t improve with consistent brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning, and good hydration, or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms like gum bleeding, pain, swelling, or a noticeable dental problem, it’s a good idea to have it evaluated.

✨ Pediatric dentist tip: Don’t just reach for a breath mint or mouthwash to cover the smell. Find the cause! Healthy breath starts with a healthy mouth.

Save this post for the next time your little one’s breath has you wondering, “What’s going on?” 🦷💙

✨ EDC at the Chesapeake Dental Conference! 🦷💙

We’re incredibly honored that EarlyDent Collective (EDC) was invited to be part of the Chesapeake Dental Conference this year!

For us, this was more than just being at a conference. It was chance to bring the voices, questions, experiences, and perspectives of early-career dentists into a space where every generation of dentistry can connect, learn, and grow together.

A huge thank you to @doringcharles for opening the door for EDC and believing in what we’re building. Your encouragement and support mean so much to us. 🫶

And to everyone who stopped by, shared a conversation, joined our podcast, or simply said hello - thank you for making EDC feel right at home!

And one of the best parts? Seeing so many old friends, familiar faces, and people who have supported us along the way. It was amazing to reconnect, catch up, meet new people, and feel the incredible sense of community that makes dentistry so special. 💙

🎙️ Stay tuned for meaningful conversations in dentistry, featuring voices from both early-career and seasoned dentists in our upcoming posts!

Different experiences. Different perspectives. One profession.

Across Generations. Every Voice Matters. 🦷✨

Programs know your grades, test scores, and resume already. The interview is a chance for them to get to know YOU, the person behind the numbers. It’s also for you to learn more about where you may be spending the next four years.

We hope this gives you more confidence going into your interviews!

The exact personal statement frameworks we followed to get into dental school & ortho residency 👉

Programs can already see your grades, awards, and experiences. What they can’t see is how those experiences shaped your perspective and led you to dentistry and your specialty.

Whether you’re applying to dental school, residency, or another healthcare program, we hope this makes the writing process a little less overwhelming.

Happy 😊 Saturday!

Yesterday, Dr. Horng attended the 2026 UMSOD Alumni Awards Ceremony. He was there to support fellow peds dental faculty, Dr. Ed Ginsberg,as he received the Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Ginsberg was an instructor when Dr. Horng was a peds dental resident and over the years has become a mentor and friend.

One of Dr. Horng’s dental school colleagues, Dr. Anna Abel, also received an award. Dr. Abel received the Distinguished Public Service Award. Although they had not seen each other in years, a number of RPD’s interns and team members had met and volunteered on dental missions with Dr. Abel and her husband Dr. Chuong Phan. Dr. Horng remembered fondly the 2 Operation Smile missions to Vietnam that he participated in with Dr. Phan.

Dr. Horng arrived late to the ceremony after driving up after work but fortunately ran into Drs. Phan and Chuong at dinner while with UMSOD alumni board member, @ddsmiles76 , and was able to congratulate and catch up with them.

At the end of the evening, Dr. Abel remarked how she had just found a peds dentist volunteer for the next Hope for Tomorrow dental mission. 🤣

Looks like he will be seeing them soon 🫡!

Happy 😊 Wednesday!

Yesterday was the final day of the ADA Dentist and Dental Student Lobby Day. Our Maryland group consisting of dentists and dental students walked the halls of Congress visiting the offices of our legislators advocating for policies and bills on behalf of our patients and colleagues.

It was great to reconnect with familiar faces and make new friends. We were able work alongside of our many colleagues from around the nation and brainstorm on future collaborations in support of oral health.

It was a sunny ☀️, brisk 💨, but beautiful 🌸🌷day to be in DC. Although our work there is done for now, we will bring our advocacy efforts back to our communities and schools.

Thank you @americandentalassociation for organizing and hosting us. We look forward to coming back again next year.

Happy Monday!

It’s Mentorship Monday! It was is also ADA Dentist and Dental Student Lobby Day in Washington, DC. It was nice to see so many dentists and dental students from across the country come to the nations capital to advocate on behalf of our patients and our profession.

And even though it is spring break at a UMSOD, it was encouraging to see @ramibanihani and @ca_tsmith18 representing @umbasda . Our delegation representing Maryland will go to the hills of Congress tomorrow to meet with senators, representatives, and their staff tomorrow.

Happy Wednesday!

It was Maryland State Dental Association (MSDA) Dentist 🦷 🧚‍♀️ Day today. Dentists and peds dental residents and dental students from UMSOD came to 🚙 Annapolis to advocate 📣on behalf of our profession and our patients. It was very nice to see how everyone worked together to educate our legislators and their aides on how current and future policies are affecting our profession.

Many of us were also able to get a tour of the state house and learn about how our state played a pivotal role during the infancy of our country 🇺🇸. We all came away with a greater appreciation of the democracy in which we live.

If you’ve never attended a Dentist Day with us, please consider joining us next year. If you don’t live in Maryland, please consider attending Dentist Day in your state.

Will you be in the room where it happens?

We are smiling after spending 3 days together. Newbie and oldie dentists sharing the learning journey together.
Aside from planning the future together, we had a conversation about clock!! She could request anything but all she wanted was digital clocks in the operatories!!!
I have the old fashioned kind!!! It’s a big generation gap!!!!!

It was a pleasure and such a wonderful time spending outside the office to plan and to learn together.

PS. She is a night owl and I am an early bird. Imagine us sharing the room together!!!
Thank you Dr. Alexandra Fitzgerald, Past MSDA President for recommending this beautiful soul to be part of #teambunnag
