Many thanks to all the attendees who joined us for this engaging two-day international workshop.
The event served as an interdisciplinary and trauma-informed space that brought together international scholars to explore asymmetrical dependencies, historical artifacts, and contemporary objects from the Neolithic period to Modernity and Postmodernity (spanning a period from 3500 BC to 2026 AD). The gathering was filled with valuable reflections on oral traditions and material culture, highlighting how historical violence has mutated into contemporary systemic structures and psychological dislocations, while amplifying diverse African voices and perspectives from across the continent.

We hope that this meeting marks the beginning of ongoing exchanges, and we look forward to seeing new conversations and collaborations emerge following this event.

🔊 Call for Papers! "Narrating Carceral Dependency"

The BCDSS, the Wilberforce Institute (WI) and the Cultures of Incarceration Centre (CIC) at the University of Hull invite proposals for an upcoming international conference taking place on 3–4 June 2027.

How and why is agency exercised by people living in coercive spaces? The central question of the conference is how carceral dependency is portrayed and addressed in narratives. Narratives in this context may include fiction, memoir, theatre and poetry, but also diaries, letters, journalism, comics and other forms. What is key is that they have either been written directly by dependent people, or are representing dependent people.

Please submit your abstract by 20 November 2026, 5pm (UK time)!

For more information, read the full open Call for Papers in our "News" in Bio.
