Last-in-first-out. Last week was a tumultuous week covering four exhibitions/conferences/lectures workshop… from Blackbirding, Women’s Cultures of Resistance in the Western Pacific, Liquid Archive with Jasmine Togo-Brisby, @jasmine.togo_brisby, Juneteenth with Tsitsi Jaji, and a visit to the belly of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, with an exclusive guided tour by Dr. Oliver Lueb, Head of scientific Department and Curator for the Oceana Collection. It was particularly interesting to view the textile and object restoration rooms, (incredible team) noting how some objects whose true provenance remains in the dark, were labelled without being contextualised.. as is often the case in ethnographical museums. It was fantastic to have participants from Papua New Guinea, Australia South Sea “ Islander”, the Pacific Islands to shed much more light on some of the pieces in the museum’s collection 🙏🏿. My education: Blackbirding “… refers to the historical practice of coercing, tricking, or kidnapping Indigenous Pacific Islanders to work as forced or indentured labourers, primarily on 19th and early 29th century plantations in Australia, Fiji, and Samoa.” It was much more than that. It left a psychological trauma spanning generations, moving from the initial victims to their modern descendants. For the victims there was a stripping of their identities, severe isolation, chronic terror and disenfranchised grief to give a few examples. For the descendants there is the presence of intergenerational trauma, identity crisis and cultural disconnection. The societal effects on the Pacific Islands include a demographic collapse, societal role void and in smaller islands, the collapse of community ( eg. Tonga’s Ata island) and economic stagnation as the theft of primary workforce collapsed local subsistence economies and traditional farming. Do visit Liquid Archives, by Jasmine Togo-Brisby @jasmine.togo_brisby . The exhibition is part of Knowing Plants, Ecologies of Memory and Practice, partnered by Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies and Global Heritage Lab @P26. @globalheritagelab. Location: Global Heritage Lab, Poststr 26, 53111 Bonn 17 June - 6 September

We warmly invite you to the opening of the new summer exhibition chapter ‚Liquid Archive’ with artist Jasmine-Togo Brisby on June 16, presenting another artistic perspective on the exhibition theme “Knowing Plants – Ecologies of Memory and Practice”. The exhibition invites visitors to engage with historically shaped relationships with plants, ecosystems, and waters, and to reflect together on more responsible ways of engaging with the environment. What memories does water hold? Drawing on her own family history, Jasmine Togo-Brisby’s exhibition ‚Liquid Archive’ explores memory, colonial histories, and healing. Through photographs and the video work Mother Tongue (2020), she creates an immersive experience. The film shows the artist together with her mother and daughter at the wreck of the Don Juan — a ship connected to so-called “blackbirding,” the violent abduction of Pacific Islanders and their forced labour on sugar plantations in Australia. Across generations, histories persist: in the body, in the image, and in the sea as a “liquid archive” in which loss, resistance, and care are embedded. The photographs expand this narrative. Submerged in the sea, the women’s bodies become memorials to colonial violence, while also asserting resilience, survival and healing. We look forward to welcoming you and to the conversations the exhibition will inspire. 📅 June 16 ⏰ 18:00 – 19:30 Book Talk: Indenture, Blackbirding and Women’s Cultures of Resistance in the Western Pacific, with Kirsten McGavin, Margaret Mishra and Jasmine Togo-Brisby ⏰ 20:00 – 21:30 Exhibition Opening: ‚Liquid Archive’ by Jasmine Togo-Brisby 📍 p26, Global Heritage Lab, 1st floor Poststraße 26, 53111 Bonn The exhibition is supported by the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies. @dependencybonn More Information: Link in Bio
