Several hundred attorneys.
One room.
One job: get even better.

Today our office gathered at the U of U College of Law for our annual continuing legal education — a full day of sharpening the legal skills we use every day on behalf of the people of Utah.

I had the chance to address most of our legal team, and this is what I said: this is the finest group of public lawyers in the country.

The work they do — in courtrooms, in negotiations, in the quiet hours drafting a brief no one will ever thank you for — is what keeps this state running.

Law is a craft. Nobody masters it; you just keep honing it. That’s why days like this matter.

And not just these moments, but the hallway conversations, the reconnecting with colleagues from across our divisions—the reminder that none of us does this alone.

It’s an honor to work alongside these lawyers who serve the state in ways most Utahns will never seen or know about. But I know. And I am so grateful.

Could not be more excited about UVU’s new President! We enjoyed getting to know Jon and Kristy Anderson at The President’s Scholarship Ball, as well as several of their children who were there as well.

Jon is a dynamic leader, academic, and the right person to take UVU to the next level. I look forward to working with him in the years to come! taken in UVU by @derekebrown

BYU’s new Arts Building is now open, and it is incredible.

Emilie and I spent literally thousands of hours as students in the old Harris Fine Arts Center as students, and even since then, which we all affectionately called the HFAC.

Music, performing, theatre—the arts. We loved joining President and sister Reese for a walk through of this incredible building which will serve generations of artists for the decades to come.

I am now more convinced than ever that in the years ahead the arts will be more critical than ever to understanding and preserving what is most important about humanity. This building will be one of those where it happens.

Thrilled to announce today that Katie Hass has been appointed Deputy General Counsel and Director of External Affairs for the Office of the Utah Attorney General.

Katie previously served as the Director of the Utah Division of Consumer Protection, where she led a team of more than 30 staff members, and rebuilt the division’s investigation and enforcement operations.

An attorney by training, Katie has practiced law with the international law firm Dechert LLP, and also worked at Melaleuca, where she developed policy and legislation at the state and federal level.

On a personal note, I have worked with Katie for many years and have been so impressed with her legal skills and abilities. In fact, many on my legal team have worked with her at length and just can’t say enough good about her.

As an office, I speak for everyone when I say that we are thrilled to have Katie as an integral part of our legal team! taken in Utah State Capitol by @derekebrown

⚖️ Colorado’s climate lawsuit could have consequences far beyond Colorado.

I’m concerned this case could open the door to a nationwide “carbon tax” that drives up costs for families, consumers, and businesses across the country.

We should not allow one state to dictate energy policy and costs for Americans everywhere.

Utah will continue standing up for affordable energy, consumers, and the rule of law. by @derekebrown

Some of the biggest decisions affecting Utah aren’t made in Utah.

I was in Washington recently as the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that could have a real impact on Utah.

At the heart of it is a pretty simple question: who gets to make national policy? Congress or individual states trying to impose their policies on everyone else through the courts?

When Utah’s interests are on the line, I’ll keep showing up and making sure our state has a voice in the fights that matter to our families, our economy and the rule of law. by @derekebrown

At the US Supreme Court … where they are having argument in probably the most impactful decision of the term (Suncor). I joined a group of state attorneys general on a brief in this case.

The case involves whether individual government entities can sue energy companies for impacts of climate change in state court, based on their actions anywhere in the world.

If the court allows it to go forward, it’s undeniable that everyone will see an impact on their energy bills.

What Colorado is trying to do will definitely have an impact on Utah energy prices. That is why I am here, and will keep you posted. taken in Supreme Court of the United States by @derekebrown

Can a single county in Colorado “impose” a carbon tax on Utah, even though Utahns never agreed? Colorado says yes.

Today Attorney General Marshall (Alabama) and I are at the US Supreme Court — talking to press about what is not only the first case of the Supreme Court’s Term, but potentially the most important: Suncor v. Boulder County.

AG Marshall and I joined a legal brief in this case because — even though the case involves a county in Colorado suing an energy company for climate change — it has everything to do with energy prices in Utah.

If the court agrees, that means that one single judge and jury in Colorado could set energy policy for the entire country. And that includes the 3.5 million people in Utah who didn’t have a vote. It’s a carbon tax dressed up in a climate change “lawsuit.”

The net effect is a massive increase in energy prices for everyone in the country. There are already dozens of similar lawsuits all around the country. Rather than dealing with the legal pandemonium from dozens of states all trying to tax all the other states, Congress has passed the Clean Air Act, which gives them the authority to regulate things like emissions that travel from one state to another.

And let’s be honest — if Colorado is successful, it will simply increase energy prices on everyone, hurting those least in a position to afford it.

I came to Washington today because the Attorney General’s job is to represent Utahns in the rooms where decisions about their lives are made — even when those rooms are 2,000 miles from home.

Today that “room” was the Supreme Court. I’ll be watching closely for the Court’s decision, and will keep you posted. by @derekebrown

Something unique to Utah is that our federal and state elected officials routinely get together to coordinate on issues that matter to the state.

We work through hard issues. We harmonize our efforts between state-elected leaders, House and Senate leadership, and those in Washington D.C.

This is one of the reasons that, as a state, we routinely punch above our weight and get so much done.

I appreciate the work of @kennedyforutah, who spearheads this effort and make sure that we’re all working on the same page.

Thanks to so many of Utah’s elected officials who make this a priority! taken in Utah State Capitol Building by @derekebrown

Utah stood up. And we won. We challenged New York’s $75 billion climate superfund law, and a federal judge struck it down. One state shouldn’t get to dictate energy policy for the rest of the country. by @derekebrown
