Biopsy thyself!

This story seemed to generate a lot of interest.

My biopsy showed a dysplastic nevus, but only mildly atypical, so I do not need any further surgery at this time.

The reason I share this photo is because I want people to know that with sun exposure, moles can change, and some can even become malignant melanoma. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, but the key is that when it is detected early, it is almost always curable. Melanoma can arise “de novo” on normal skin, but it can also arise in a pre-existing mole.

When I was away on vacation last week, despite lots of SPF and efforts to stay in the shade, I noticed this mole (which I’ve had for many years) got darker, so I promptly biopsied it when I got back home. Yes, it was a little strange to perform a biopsy on myself, but one of my medical assistants numbed the area, and I do this all day on patients, so why not on myself?

Melanoma happens to be very common on the thighs in women. In men, the upper back and chest are most common. But, melanoma can occur anywhere in both genders, and in all skin types.

If you notice a mole that is new, changing or suspicious, see a dermatologist right away. Early detection is key!

“Chicago will not remember your marathon time.
But it will remember that you didn’t quit.”
— Man holding sign at Mile 19

Today was a tough one. For various reasons, other than a half marathon with my sister in law @kkaufmann7 in March, I haven’t run more than 10 miles since last year’s NYC marathon. Thanks to the magical @dr.sabrinastrickland and lots of red light, bamboo compression, and @docjuice massages, I was able to run today.

I am so thankful for the support of my amazing friends and family. Especially superwoman @drjkaren who crushed it and then came back to get me through the grueling and HOT 25th mile. (We may both be sunburned 😳 )

Marathon 14 in the books. I love this city.

Happy birthday @drjkaren! There is no one I’d rather work alongside, live next door to, or run side by side with than you. Your selflessness, generosity and big heart are unparalleled, and no one has ever done a better running man. Even though your light run has become my sprint, I’m so happy that we keep doing life together. I am the luckiest to have you as my sister and best friend 🩷🩷

Can you spot the dermatologist?

When we boarded the plane for Greece, we had no idea what Game 5 would bring. The Knicks actually clinched the title as we flew over France.

Through Santorini, Mykonos, and Athens, our enthusiasm stayed high. We enjoyed beautiful beaches, delicious food, cherished time with cousins, and celebrating the greatest team to ever play the game.

I may never wash the Parthenon dust off my hat. 🇬🇷 💙🧡 taken in Greece by @dermdrhale

Decoding Women’s Health | New episode
Decoding Midlife Skin

We sat down with Dr. Elizabeth Hale - board-certified dermatologist and Clinical Associate Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine
- to cut through the noise and talk about what actually works for skin in perimenopause and beyond.

Here is what you need to know:
*Collagen loss begins as early as your thirties — and the hormonal changes of perimenopause and menopause accelerate it significantly.
*Two ingredients have the strongest evidence for protection and maintenance of collagen: broad-spectrum SPF daily and a retinoid. Everything else is optional.
*UVA rays penetrate clouds and windows year round. If you are not wearing sunscreen every day, you are aging faster than you need to.
*Crepey skin, adult acne, hair thinning - these are not just cosmetic complaints. They are hormonal. And they are addressable.
*An annual skin check is non-negotiable. Non-melanoma skin cancers are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the US - more cases than breast, lung, and colon combined. Yet most women don’t think to get an annual skin check.

The best routine is the one you will actually do.
Start with SPF and a topical retinoid.
Build from there.

New episode out now.
