POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Smiling in this moment of pride today for my accomplishments. While I most certainly will never dig the tunnel all the way to the other side of mastery, I am accepting this current victory. Grateful to my teachers, friends, classmates and colleagues who have supported me thru some of my darkest. Love you. by @derswerld

I combined two esoteric subcultures into one ridiculous reel and I am probably the only person who thinks this is funny.

I guess I’ve had these beautiful little babies for as long as I’ve been a bodyworker! Thank you @roberttreeceart_ for the wonderful chat and paintings that have carried my soul through the years. They’re in my office now! They really bring my intake corner together! taken in Madison, Wisconsin by @derswerld

Punk Mercy

Circa 2011: Sarah L (has tags turned off) and Ders caught deep in a Health Hole.

Most of you know me from my first love: heavy music and culture. While I’m not necessarily seeking to merge my hobbies with my career at this time, I’d like to acknowledge my peers in the ‘scene: Hello, it’s been a while. Just so you know, I’m also a therapist. Not a talk therapist- a spatial therapist. I put bodies back together after their years of misuse, damage or poor posture (hello fellow slam dancers, skaters and mashers) using a fascial release therapy called Structural Integration, born of Rolfing®. My Licensure is that of a Massage or Bodywork Therapist in Wisconsin.

I wouldn’t have started this career without punk, DIY, hardcore and just counter-culture in general. I make a living today thanks to an injury I’d sustained to my wrist in 2011 which threatened my ability to ever play drums again. I was slinging ‘cream 50 hours per week at Coldstone and practicing blast beats 4-5 hours a day, when a friend asked to play mercy at work. I lost that game of mercy, miserably. I couldn’t scoop the same way with my right hand, which led to a compensatory repetitive strain injury in my left (see double-splints above).

Two years later, I enrolled in massage therapy school. An early twenty-somethings Ice Cream Man in Sam Hill, Wisconsin thought he could play drums for a living, but then he blew out his wrist playing Mercy, lost all hope and on a whim decided to go to massage school.

What’s weirder: I’ve always hated massage. Spa music is patronizing and categorically un-magical. Jojoba oil is slimy and uncomfortable.

But at the time I was so desperate for any inkling how to fix my frickin’ hand. I’d had x-ray, ultrasound, an MRI that was assessed by a *hand specialist* and I’d tried PT. “Tendonitis” was all any of them could come up with. To quote the hand specialist: “Honestly, everything looks pretty good! Make sure to come back if it keeps bothering you and we can prescribe you something to treat the pain.” What? Say that again?

“I said you’ll never be able to play your drums again because life sucks, bud. So just eat pills and give up.”

To be continued… taken in Madison, Wisconsin by @derswerld
