I kept returning to mauve while painting In Love with Mauves. The mountain stayed dark and grounded, but the sky moved into violet, lavender, gray, and small flashes of yellow. Sometimes I get into a groove and using a particular palette for a small series of paintings. These are wet off the easel and inspired by desert road trips. When I paint nature like this, I definitely get in a place of zen.

I think of October as my artistic month.

I picture an evening in the desert: traffic thinning as the last heat lets go, the sky deepening to cobalt, and a motel sign flickering awake against the dusk. The whole day seems to exhale. I feel it in New Mexico, where my love of painting first took root, and here in Palm Springs, where the desert keeps finding new ways to surprise me.

Maybe October feels like mine because it brings that first little spark of change—the invitation to look again, follow the light, and make something from the feeling of a place. This month, I’m sharing the colors, memories, and moments that make it so meaningful to me.

I am often compelled to paint what is in Mi Alma, my soul, and that is my special place of New Mexico…..mi santuario……my sanctuary. A place that has been inspiring great Artists for a very long time.

Some of these are paintings I’ve already done of New Mexico and summer ideas that I am sorting through from many many pictures as inspiration.
